Observation questions
- What details do the three Gospel accounts give about the boy’s suffering, and what details reveal the depth of the father’s desperation?
- In Mark’s account, who is arguing when Jesus arrives, and what does Jesus do instead of joining their argument? [26:36]
- What does Jesus do for the boy after rebuking the unclean spirit, and what does Luke emphasize about the father at the end of the healing? [28:57]
- What question do the disciples ask Jesus privately, and what answer does Jesus give them? [39:04]
Interpretation questions
- Jesus’ words about a “faithless and twisted generation” come in the middle of a suffering family’s crisis and a crowd’s argument. Why is it important not to treat these words as blame directed at the father or his suffering son? [25:27]
- Mark includes the scribes arguing with the disciples while the father and son are in pain. What does this reveal about the danger of discussing religious, political, or theological issues while overlooking the actual person in need? [27:33]
- Jesus commands the unclean spirit and restores the boy to his father. How does this passage hold together the reality of darkness with the greater reality of Jesus’ authority and compassion? [46:46]
- Jesus says the disciples’ failure was connected to prayer. How does prayer show dependence on God rather than becoming another ministry technique or formula? [41:40]
Application questions
- Where are you most tempted to become like the arguing scribes—focused on being right, winning a point, or reacting to controversy—while someone near you needs compassion, attention, or practical care? [54:38]
- Is there a person in your life who is carrying visible pain or a quiet burden? What would it look like this week to move toward them with the kindness of Jesus rather than advice, debate, or avoidance?
- Are there recurring sin patterns, habits, or situations that you tend to keep hidden? What “door or window” might need to be closed through confession, wise boundaries, accountability, or prayer with a trusted believer? [49:05]
- Deep wounds can leave people believing lies about God, themselves, or the world. Is there a painful experience that still seems to shape your reactions, fears, shame, or sense of worth? What would be a safe next step toward bringing that wound into the light? [49:41]
- Where have competence, experience, preparation, or past success made you less aware of your need for God? What specific part of your life or service needs renewed prayerful dependence this week? [42:03]
- Jesus calls his people toward a world filled with pain, loneliness, and need. Who may God be placing in your ordinary relationships, workplace, neighborhood, or family for you to love, serve, encourage, or speak the gospel to? [53:17]
