Mountain And Valley Ministry

God gives praise as the first answer to whatever tries to keep His people down. The enemy says, “stay down,” especially after bad moments, bad seasons, and wounds that make getting back up feel impossible. Second Chronicles 20 shows Judah winning before fighting, because “as they began to sing and praise,” the Lord set ambushes and defeated the enemy. Acts 16 shows Paul and Silas praying and singing in jail, and God shakes not only their chains loose, but “everyone’s chains” loose. Joshua 6 shows Jericho falling after the shout of victory came at the beginning, not after the battle was already over. God’s people are called to declare, “God’s got it,” and to praise Him as the One who already has power over what is pressing down.

Matthew 17 then gives Peter, James, and John one of those moments that stays with a person. Jesus takes the three up a high mountain, and His glory becomes visible. His face shines like the sun, His clothes become white as light, and heaven breaks into the earth they have known. The mountain reveals who Jesus is. The disciples had heard Him talk about suffering and the cross, but before they see humiliation, God lets them see majesty. John later says, “We observed His glory,” because that mountain became part of the foundation of how he knew Jesus.

Moses and Elijah appear because God’s whole story is coming together in Jesus. Moses represents the law, Elijah represents the prophets, and both are speaking with Jesus about His “departure,” His exodus. Moses led God’s people out of bondage, Elijah called God’s people back from false worship, and Jesus fulfills it all by leading people out of sin into righteousness. The cross was never plan B. Every sacrifice, promise, and prophecy converges in Him.

Peter wants to build three shelters, but the Father interrupts him. Heaven says, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him.” Jesus is not one voice among many voices. Jesus is the voice. When Moses and Elijah are gone, only Jesus remains.

The mountain does not become the destination. Jesus touches the terrified disciples and says, “Get up. Don’t be afraid.” Then He leads them down into the valley, where a desperate father and suffering son are waiting. The mountain prepares disciples for ministry in broken places. God gives moments of praise, prayer, worship, and revelation not so His people can become a dead end road for His glory, but so His Spirit can flow through them.
