The Mountain of the Lord: Millennial Hope and Restoration

Micah turns from a whole lot of heaviness to the hope God has promised. Chapter one showed sins against God, chapter two sins against each other, and chapter three sins of political and religious leaders. Chapter four takes that prophetic pivot and looks out to “the last days,” when God is not done with his people and Jesus Christ comes back to reign.

Micah points to a literal, visible, physical kingdom, with Jesus Christ literally, visibly, physically sitting on a throne in Jerusalem. God has not brought that kingdom yet, because God is presently forming the church in this parenthetical time of grace, made up of Jew and Gentile who have trusted the gospel of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. Christ will catch the church up, the world will enter the time of Jacob’s trouble, and then Jesus will come back to the earth. Christ will put his foot on the Mount of Olives, that mountain will split, and the King of kings and Lord of lords will reign.

Daniel’s stone cut out without hands helps explain Micah’s mountain. The stone crushes the kingdoms of this world, becomes a great mountain, and fills the whole earth. Micah says that mountain of the house of the Lord will be established in Zion, exalted above the hills. Zion had just been described as plowed under and turned to heaps, but one verse later God establishes the holy mountain there.

The nations flow up to Jerusalem, while Ezekiel’s river flows out from the temple for the healing of the land. Christ himself teaches the nations his ways, and the law goes forth from Zion. Christ also judges and rebukes the nations, and peace spreads so completely that swords become plowshares and spears become pruning hooks. Micah’s full line makes clear what the UN cannot do: only the Lord can judge in such a way that war becomes obsolete.

The vine and fig tree picture shows safety, property, rest, and prosperity without fear. Micah still says some will choose wrong even under Christ’s reign, but he declares, “we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever.” God gathers the halted, the afflicted, and the driven out, just like Jacob, wounded and renamed Israel. The labor pains of exile will be real, even Babylon will come, but the delivery will come too. The enemies who rejoice over Zion do not know the thoughts of the Lord, because God is gathering them like sheaves to the threshing floor. Zion, once afflicted, will be strengthened with horns of iron and hooves of brass, and the Lord of the whole earth will keep every word he has spoken.
