Bible ReadingNumbers 11:10–30Moses heard the people of every family wailing at the entrance to their tents. The Lord became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled.
[50:40]He asked the Lord, “Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me? Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant, to the land you promised on oath to their ancestors?”
[51:14]“Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat.’ I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me—if I have found favor in your eyes—and do not let me face my own ruin.”
[52:06]The Lord said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people. Have them come to the tent of meeting, that they may stand there with you. I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them. They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone.”
[53:21]So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied—but did not do so again.
[54:34]However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp.
[55:07]A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”
[55:25]But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.
[55:42]Joel 2:28–29“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.”
[01:09:04]“Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”
[01:09:23]John 14:16–17, 26“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”
[01:15:51]“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
[01:18:40]Acts 2:1–4, 17–18, 33, 38–39When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
[01:10:23]They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
[01:10:23]“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.”
[01:11:04]“Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.”
[01:11:04]“Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.”
[01:10:31]Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
[01:11:09]“The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

- In Joel and Acts 2, which groups of people are specifically named as recipients of the Spirit’s outpouring? [01:09:15]
Interpretation questions- Why does God’s answer to Moses include both shared leadership and the Spirit’s power, rather than simply telling Moses to work harder or become more organized? [57:06]
- What does Moses’ wish that “all the Lord’s people were prophets” reveal about God’s desire to share his Spirit beyond a small group of recognized leaders? [01:07:47]
- Eldad and Medad receive the Spirit away from the tent of meeting. What might this show about God’s freedom to work in ordinary places and through people others may overlook? [01:06:46]
- Jesus calls the Holy Spirit an Advocate who is like him and who teaches believers. How might this shape a Christian’s understanding of the Spirit as a personal helper rather than an impersonal power? [01:17:12]
Application questions- Where does life currently feel too heavy to carry alone—at work, in parenting, in relationships, in finances, or in a struggle with sin? What would it look like to bring that burden honestly to God as Moses did? [58:46]
- The sailboat has sails meant to catch the wind, but it is easy to keep the sails down and paddle harder. In what area has self-effort left someone weary, frustrated, or discouraged? What could “raising the sail” look like in a practical way this week? [01:01:11]
- The Spirit’s power is promised not only for visible leaders but for all whom God calls. Is there any reason someone in the group tends to think this promise is for more impressive, mature, or outgoing Christians? How does Acts 2 speak to that hesitation? [01:11:09]
- Jesus describes the Spirit as Advocate, Counselor, Helper, Comforter, Intercessor, and Guide. Which of those names feels especially needed right now, and why? [01:17:24]
- A relationship with the Holy Spirit includes listening, asking, and learning. What simple, honest question could someone begin bringing to the Holy Spirit each day—for example, “Teach me,” “Guide me,” or “Show me where I need your power”? [01:21:45]
- The Spirit convicts believers because sin grieves a personal God. Is there impatience, distraction, lust, addiction, resentment, or another pattern that needs to be brought into Christ’s light through confession? What help or accountability may be needed as well? [01:25:39]
- Christ removes sin and fills his people with his Spirit again and again. How does that promise give hope to someone who feels defeated by repeated failure or ashamed to come back to God? [01:37:05]
