Chosen, Shaped, and Sent: Moses' Journey of Faith

Exodus places Moses inside a long, heavy story. Israel had been in Egypt for 430 years, and a whole lot had changed. Joseph had once saved Egypt, but over time his family became a threat, and Egypt turned the Hebrews into cheap labor, less than citizens, slaves in their own land. God never forgot his people. God was waiting, and God had a plan.

Exodus 2 shows God protecting Moses before Moses even knew how to follow him. Pharaoh wanted Hebrew baby boys dead, but Moses was drawn out of the water and raised in Pharaoh’s own house. God even worked it so Moses’ own mother got paid to nurse and raise him. That is not luck. That is God moving before Moses knew God was moving.

Moses’ young life shows pride and impatience. Moses saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, and instead of simply stopping wrong, Moses took it too far and killed the man. Moses tried to bury the evidence, but there is no such thing as secrets because God knows. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires, and Moses had to learn that forcing outcomes with fleshly anger makes things go sideways.

Exodus 3 shows Moses in the wilderness, no longer a prince, just a regular Joe Schmo watching sheep for his father-in-law. The wilderness washed away pride. The burning bush was strange, holy, and huge, because God spoke to Moses there and called him to go back to Egypt. Moses gave excuse after excuse, saying, “Who am I?” and “I get tongue tied,” but God does not see inadequacy the way people do. God had chosen him.

Exodus 33 shows Moses in the older season, carrying a heavy burden and learning true dependence. The tent of meeting became the place outside the chaos where Moses met with God face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Moses knew that without God’s presence, there was no point in moving forward. The real distinction of God’s people was not talent, strategy, or strength, but God going with them.

Moses’ legacy was not entering the promised land. Moses’ legacy was getting the people ready and preparing Joshua to lead after him. God used Moses through pride, obscurity, failure, burden, and old age. God began the work, and God was faithful to keep working until the next generation could hear of his mighty acts.
