From Insecurity to Dependence: Moses and God's Presence

Insecurity makes its case when God stirs something that feels bigger than a person can carry. It says, “not ready,” “not qualified,” “surely someone else is better,” and that quick, fear starts calling a person out of what God is calling that person into.

Exodus 3 places Moses right in that tension. Moses is not introduced as an obvious leader. He is Hebrew by birth, raised in Pharaoh’s house, marked by an identity crisis, and carrying the weight of killing an Egyptian. Forty years in the wilderness leave him with no spotlight, no influence, no title. Moses looks like a shepherd hiding in obscurity, not the man who will confront Pharaoh and lead Israel out of slavery.

God shows up in that very place of failure and seeming disqualification. God sees Israel’s oppression, hears their cries, and says, “Come, I will send you to Pharaoh.” Moses answers with the question insecurity always asks: “Who am I?” Moses is not doubting that God is powerful. Moses is doubting whether God can use him.

Insecurity causes a person to focus on what is not true of the person instead of who God is. Moses’ failure is real, and sin matters, but Moses’ failure is not bigger than God’s ability to redeem. God does not build Moses’ self-esteem by saying, “Believe in yourself.” God redirects Moses away from himself and says, “I will be with you.”

God’s calling always requires more than human strength can accomplish. Moses cannot free Israel in his own strength, but that was never the ask. God is not asking Moses to become self-sufficient. God is inviting Moses to become more God-dependent. Biblical confidence is not self-reliance. Biblical confidence says, “God is with me. God has called me. God can be trusted.”

God gives Moses the name “I AM,” not “I was” or “I will become.” Pharaoh rises and falls. Kingdoms rise and fall. Human strength rises and falls. But God is unchanging, dependent on nothing outside himself, and enough forever. Moses’ “not enough” becomes the perfect canvas for God’s “I AM.”

Moses changes as dependence deepens. The shepherd asking “Who am I?” becomes the leader saying, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord.” Later, Moses would rather stay in the wilderness with God than enter the promised land without him. Jesus makes that presence possible for all who belong to him. Because of the cross and resurrection, God’s people do not simply know about God. God’s people can walk and live in his presence, and that presence is enough.
