More Than Conquerors | Week 1

Romans 8 begins with one of the most hopeful declarations in Scripture: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Paul uses courtroom language, so condemnation is not a vague feeling of shame. Condemnation is the guilty verdict and the deserved sentence that falls on sinners before a holy judge. Romans has already made the case: all have sinned, the wages of sin is death, and God will judge the world in righteousness through the risen Christ.

Paul’s “therefore” points back across the whole argument of Romans. The gospel is the power of God for salvation. Sinners are justified by grace as a gift, through faith, apart from works of the law. Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness. The believer has peace with God through Jesus Christ, not because sin has become small, but because Christ has set the believer free from the law of sin and death.

The law is not sinful. God’s law is good, holy, and perfect. The problem is the flesh. The law exposes sin, names sin, and proves guilt, but the law cannot save because sinful flesh cannot keep it. Jesus did not come merely as an example, because a perfect example by itself would only condemn sinners all the more. Jesus came as Savior.

Romans 8 says, “For what the law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did.” That is the turning point. With man, salvation is impossible, but with God, all things are possible. God sent his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, not in sinful flesh. Christ was fully human, fully God, tempted like sinners are, yet without sin. As the spotless offering for sin, Christ condemned sin in the flesh.

The great reversal stands at the heart of the gospel. Sin once condemned sinners, but Christ condemned sin. God treated Jesus the way sinners deserved to be treated, and God treats those in Christ the way Jesus deserves to be treated. Isaiah had already promised that the righteous servant would bear iniquities and make many to be accounted righteous.

Romans 8:4 then calls the believer to walk accordingly. Christ did not pull people out of darkness so they could keep walking in darkness. God saves by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, and God creates his people for good works prepared beforehand. The flesh and the Spirit still war against each other, but in Christ the believer may lose battles while knowing the war has already been won.
