Day 1: Two Incompatible Minds: Death or Life

The human mind orbits one of two realities: death or life. A mind fixed on fleshly cravings decays into hostility toward God, powerless to obey Him. But a mind awakened by the Spirit breathes life, peace, and submission to Christ. These two minds cannot coexist—like oil and water, they repel. One belongs to those still dead in sin; the other to those resurrected by grace. The divide is absolute, yet God alone bridges it. [25:59]

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. (Romans 8:5-6, ESV)

Sermon Summary

Romans 8:5-11 draws a hard line that cannot be blurred. Paul says there are only two minds, the mind of the flesh and the mind of the Spirit. The world talks a lot about how different people are, and there is truth to that, but Paul goes deeper than personality, taste, clothing, music, or food. At the core, there are only two spiritual realities.

Paul makes a careful distinction between things that are opposed and things that are incompatible. The flesh and the Spirit are opposed in the Christian, still fighting, still making war, still keeping the believer from doing what the heart truly wants. But the mind of the flesh and the mind of the Spirit are incompatible. They do not coexist. A Christian may think fleshly things and still battle sin, but a Christian does not have the mind of the flesh as the ruling condition.

Romans 8 says the mind of the flesh is death. Paul does not say it leads to death. He says it is death. That mind is hostile to God, does not submit to God’s law, and indeed cannot. The issue is not that the unbeliever needs a little more effort, a little more religion, or a better mindset. The issue is inability. The flesh has no power to please God.

Titus says salvation comes not by works done in righteousness, but by washing, regeneration, and renewal of the Holy Spirit. The gospel is not a drowning person grabbing a life preserver. The better picture is a dead body at the bottom of the ocean, and God dives in, brings that body to shore, and breathes life into it.

Paul then shows that there are only two conditions. A person is either condemned or not condemned. A person either has the Spirit and belongs to Christ, or does not have the Spirit and does not belong to him. The Spirit is called the Spirit, the Spirit of God, and the Spirit of Christ, because the one true God gives himself to his people.

The Christian’s struggle with sin does not erase that gift. The dead corpse of the flesh still gets dragged along and still causes stumbling, but the Spirit bears witness that the believer is a child of God. Assurance finally rests not on pretending the struggle is gone, but on true belief in Christ, confession of sin, and God’s power to guard what belongs to him.

So Paul again is going to now describe the difference between a Christian and a non Christian, a believer and a nonbeliever, one who is condemned and one who is not condemned. Verse six, he makes this clear. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the spirit is life and peace. Now more literally in the Greek, which I think is far more helpful, it actually says, the mind of the flesh is death, and the mind of the spirit is life and peace. And notice he doesn't say the mind of flesh leads to death. No, he says it is death. And he also doesn't say that the mind of the spirit leads to life. No, he says it is life and peace. These two minds are incompatible. They can't coexist within one person. You're you can't be dead if you're a little bit alive, and you can't be alive if you're a little bit dead. It's one or the other.”
