Day 1: Wheat in the Winepress – Peace Hiding in Chaos

Gideon threshed wheat in a winepress – a picture of fear-driven survival, not faith. True peace isn’t found in perfect circumstances but in God’s presence amid chaos. Like the painter’s storm scene with a calm boy, peace thrives where we least expect it. Our culture chases peace through control, substances, or distraction, but Jehovah Shalom dwells in surrendered hearts. This peace isn’t passive; it’s a Person ruling over storms. Gideon’s hiding place became holy ground when God showed up. [42:47]

“But the Lord said to him, ‘Peace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die.’ Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace.”

Day 2: Mighty Man of Valor – God Names Your Becoming

The angel called Gideon “mighty man of valor” while he cowered in fear. Jehovah Shalom speaks to who we’re becoming in Christ, not who we appear to be. God’s declaration overrides present failures, clothing us in Christ’s righteousness. Like Gideon, we’re called to partner with God’s future vision for us. Like checking weather apps for storms, we often monitor circumstances instead of cultivating obedience. Gideon’s nation reaped seven years of consequences, yet God still offered redemption. True peace grows in soil tilled by repentance and watered with faithfulness. [42:10]

Day 4: Rewiring the Replay – From Anxiety Tapes to Cross Tapes

Our minds naturally loop worst-case scenarios like a broken record. Paul commands believers to “rewire the tape” – replacing anxious scripts with Christ’s victory. Gideon needed fire from heaven to shift his focus; we have the Spirit within. Peace rules when we marinate our thoughts in who God is rather than what ifs. This mental renewal isn’t positive thinking – it’s resurrection reality. [55:57]

This peace isn’t a feeling but a Person inhabiting our chaos. Like a child resting through a storm because their parent is present, we trust the One who sleeps in boats. Final peace comes not from fixed circumstances but from Christ’s fixed presence. [59:20]

Sermon Summary

Jehovah Shalom names the Lord as peace, not just as the one who gives peace, but as peace himself. Peace, in Judges 6, is not calm circumstances, fixed problems, full bank accounts, perfect kids, or the right relationship status. The picture of peace is the little boy calm in the corner while lightning, thunder, and darkness are all around him. Peace does not mean problems will not come. Peace means problems will not have the heart.

Judges 6 places Gideon in the middle of Israel’s backsliding. Israel has the law, the word, and the decrees of God, yet Israel keeps putting other things before the Lord. Disobedience disrupts peace, and righteousness accompanies peace. The Midianites have bullied and ransacked Israel for seven years, and Gideon is hiding in a wine press, stomping out wheat where wheat does not belong. Gideon looks scared, weak, and anything but brave.

The angel of the Lord calls Gideon, “mighty man of valor.” Jehovah Shalom speaks to who Gideon is becoming, not merely to who Gideon is in that moment. The Lord sees Gideon clothed in what God will make him, not trapped in the fear that currently marks him. That same grace speaks over broken people, imperfect leaders, and churches still being formed into the image of Jesus. No perfect church exists, because the church stopped being perfect the moment people walked in. Only God is perfect, and God is gracious enough to use jacked-up people to advance his kingdom.

Gideon answers with honest disappointment. Gideon has heard about the wonders of God, but he has not witnessed them in his own life. The Lord does not shame that question. The Lord sends Gideon anyway, telling him to go in the might he has, because the Lord himself is sending him. Abandoned kids do not get spoken to by their dad, and Gideon is being addressed by the God who has not left.

The sign at the offering shows Gideon that the angel of the Lord has truly come. The fire consumes the meat and cakes, Gideon fears death, and the Lord says, “Peace be to you. Do not fear, you shall not die.” The altar receives the name Jehovah Shalom, the Lord is peace.

Christ brings that name all the way home. Jesus lives, dies, rises, ascends, and sends the Holy Spirit to dwell inside God’s people. The peace of God is not something believers fight to get. The peace of God already lives inside them, and the Spirit rewires the mind as the heart stops replaying anxiety and starts replaying the cross.

I find it odd that the angel of the Lord would find would find Gideon stomping out wheat in a wine press, and he would call him mighty man of valor. He's hiding. Something doesn't add up. You're not mighty. In most of our eyes, Gideon would be seen as weak. He would be seen as a coward. Why does the Lord speak to him and say, hey, mighty man of valor. And I think it's something very important that we need to see in the text of scripture is that I'm really thankful that Jehovah Shalom will speak to our future and not to our present.
