Genesis 20 shows Abraham falling right back into an old fear pattern. Abraham has already pulled the “she’s my sister” move in Egypt, and twenty years later he does it again in Gerar because he is scared somebody will kill him and take Sarah. Fear puts God’s promise in a dangerous spot, because Sarah is about to bear the child God promised would come through Abraham.
Misplaced fear sits behind most terrible decisions. Abraham’s fear makes him believe his own self talk, invent a scenario with no evidence, assume the worst about people he has never met, tell half truths, and deflect blame onto Sarah and even God. The garden story shows the same mess: Adam and Eve believed a lie about God, assumed God was withholding from them, accepted a half truth, hid in fear, and shifted blame.
God does not leave fearful people hiding in the bushes. God comes near, asks, “What have you done?” brings sin into the open, provides what is needed, and makes promises to fix the mess. God protects Sarah from Abimelech because God’s promise cannot be wrecked by Abraham’s failure. God also restores Abraham after Abraham epically fails again, even using Abraham to pray for and bless the man he sinned against.
The fear itself is not Abraham’s biggest problem. The fear is misplaced. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom because the glory, power, holiness, and authority of God eclipse the fears of people, fallout, consequences, and chaos. Isaiah sees the Lord high and lifted up and realizes that no earthly threat can compare.
The grace of God keeps holy fear from becoming a fear that runs away. God cleanses Isaiah with a coal from the altar, covers Adam and Eve’s shame through sacrifice, and covers sinners through Jesus Christ. Christ takes guilt and shame on the cross and gives his righteousness in return. Romans 8:1 means that those in Christ have no condemnation, even after they sin again.
The identity God gives also changes the way fearful people come near. God calls Abraham a prophet, not a fool defined by his worst failure. God calls his people forgiven, loved, adopted sons and daughters, and friends. The fear of the Lord makes God’s children run to him like a child running to a strong father.
The peace of Jesus is not a quiet, controlled, isolated life. The peace of Jesus is a quiet soul when life is chaos and off the rails and bananas. God calls his people to know him, receive his grace, know who they are, and live boldly in the things fear has kept them from doing.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Misplaced fear drives terrible decisions Fear rarely stays private. Fear starts making up stories, assuming the worst, bending the truth, and shifting blame when exposure feels too costly. Abraham’s failure shows that the thing feared most will often become the thing obeyed most. [32:34]
- 2. God comes into hiding places God does not wait for fearful, ashamed people to get themselves together before drawing near. God asks hard questions because he intends to bring what is hidden into the light, not to crush his people but to provide for them. God’s pursuit is stronger than the instinct to stay in the bushes. [38:29]
- 3. Grace covers guilt and shame God’s grace does not pretend sin is small, but it does refuse to let sin have the final word. Christ receives the guilt and shame sinners cannot cover for themselves and gives them his righteousness instead. No condemnation means failure is real, but it is not ultimate for those in Christ. [49:24]
- 4. Identity comes from God’s grace God calls Abraham a prophet even after Abraham acts like a fool. Past failures can describe real wounds and real sin, but they cannot name God’s children more finally than God does. Adoption gives fearful people access to the Father instead of a reason to run from him. [51:35]
- 5. Peace is a quiet soul Fear tries to manufacture peace through comfort, control, distance, and a carefully protected lifestyle. Jesus gives a deeper peace that holds steady when obedience disrupts comfort and life gets difficult. Bold obedience grows where God’s peace matters more than self-made safety.
