Paul identifies himself in Ephesians 3 as a minister of the gospel by the gift of God’s grace and the working of God’s power. The mystery once hidden in God is now revealed in Christ Jesus: through his death and resurrection, salvation is offered to all men and women, Jew and Gentile alike. The gospel is no respecter of persons because all have sinned and all must come to Christ on the same footing.
The word minister carries the sense of a servant, even a server of tables. Christ himself gives that word its central meaning: the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Christ turns the world’s hierarchy upside down. The One with all authority offers himself for the sake of others, ministers to his apostles on the eve of his death, and goes to the Father in his own hour of anguish.
The church therefore cannot treat ministry as the work of a select few. Ministry includes charitable service, the proclamation of the gospel, and leadership where God gives that calling, but it belongs to the whole body of Christ. The church is a lampstand, yet the light is not its own. Christ’s light shines as believers serve one another and minister the good news to a darkened world.
The unsearchable riches of Christ reveal what human reason could never discover. Philosophers may reason toward an eternal, powerful God, but they cannot find the plan of God by searching nature or looking within themselves. God’s ways are like a deep, bottomless well. “Let God be God” becomes the needed word when his wisdom does not fit human expectations. Christ makes known the Father, gives living water that does not run dry, and reveals the salvation hidden from the ages.
Paul also declares that God’s manifold wisdom is made known through the church to rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. The demonic powers were not privy to God’s plan. Christ’s incarnation, ministry, cross, resurrection, and the existence of a people reconciled to God announce their defeat. The church does not need to live in fear of the spiritual realm, nor pretend it does not exist. Christ’s victory means that the powers which enslave people do not have the final word.
God’s plan remains at work when the world looks bleak, when elections come and go, and when evil appears to win. God is still in control, and he will bring all things together in Christ. The old, old story remains the church’s ministry: Jesus Christ died and rose again so that sinners may know the Father.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Christ makes servants, not social climbers [46:20] Christ does not merely tell his followers to serve. Christ reveals service as the shape of his own saving work, giving his life as a ransom for many. Christian ministry cannot be measured by status, visibility, or recognition because its center is the lowliness of Christ. Service becomes faithful when it gives itself away for the good of another. [46:20]
- 2. The gospel honors no human hierarchy [43:29] The mystery revealed in Christ tears down every claim that some people are naturally nearer to God than others. Jew and Gentile, respectable and broken, religious and irreligious all stand in need of the same Savior. Grace does not flatter human rank; grace exposes sin and freely receives all who come by faith. The church must never rebuild the walls Christ has torn down. [43:29]
- 3. God’s wisdom cannot be managed [58:48] God’s plan often does not follow the path human wisdom would choose. His judgments are unsearchable, not because they are irrational, but because they arise from infinite knowledge and perfect wisdom. “Let God be God” calls for humble trust when circumstances remain unresolved. Faith receives what God has revealed without demanding control over what he has withheld. [58:48]
- 4. The church displays Christ’s victory [01:08:41] A people reconciled to God becomes evidence that Satan’s accusations have lost their power. The church’s existence declares that forgiveness has come, captives can be set free, and the kingdom of evil will not prevail. This witness does not require fearlessness rooted in personality. It rests on Christ’s accomplished victory and God’s continuing purpose.
