The Mind of Christ: Humility that Unites the Church

Paul brings Philippians 2:1-11 to the center of life together as God’s people by turning the church’s eyes toward Jesus Christ. The church in Philippi loved the Lord, supported the work of the gospel, and yet carried tension that threatened its ability to stand firm together. The grace they shared in Christ gave Paul the ground for his appeal. Encouragement in Christ, comfort from love, participation in the Spirit, affection, and sympathy were not uncertain possibilities. They were covenant mercies already given to the church.

The grace of God holds a congregation together at a deeper level than preferences, personalities, plans, music, or methods. The same Jesus has received His people, the same Spirit dwells among them, and the same mercy has made them one family. The shared mind Paul calls for is not agreement on every opinion. The shared mind is a gospel-shaped way of seeing one another and seeking the same good, even when hard conversations, wounds, repentance, and repair are needed.

Selfish ambition and empty glory pull that shared life apart. Empty glory hides inside good work when recognition becomes necessary, personal ideas must carry the greatest weight, or pride disguises itself as conviction. Humility does not deny gifts or pretend that every other person is wiser. Humility gives another person’s concern genuine attention and genuine weight. The interests of others call Christians to lift their eyes long enough to see what another brother or sister is carrying and bringing to the table.

Christ gives this humility its true name and shape. Christ existed in the form of God, possessing the glory, dignity, and nature of God, yet He did not use equality with God to His own advantage. Christ emptied Himself not by ceasing to be God, but by taking the form of a servant and entering human weakness. Christ humbled Himself all the way to the cross, carrying guilt and judgment in order to reconcile sinners to God.

God the Father then highly exalted the crucified Christ and gave Him the name above every name. Jesus Christ is Lord, and that confession frees His people from grasping for recognition. The mind of Christ forms a church where status, influence, experience, and ability become means of serving others. The Lord’s Table renews this covenant life, calling pride, protected hurt, and fractured relationships into the mercy of Christ. The crucified and exalted Lord makes His own life visible in a people learning to give themselves in love and humility.
