The Branch Crowned: Messiah as Priest and King

Zechariah 6:9-15 turns from the eight night visions to a fresh word of the Lord with instructions attached. The Lord tells Zechariah to go the same day to the house of Josiah, where recently returned exiles from Babylon have brought silver and gold. The Lord directs Zechariah to receive those gifts, make a crown, and place it on the head of Joshua, the high priest.

The crown on Joshua’s head matters because Joshua is not the governor from David’s line. Zerubbabel would have been the expected political figure, but the Lord does not put the crown there. The Lord places royal imagery on the priest in order to point beyond Joshua to someone greater. The act becomes a living picture, not a permanent office for Joshua, but a sign of the coming Branch.

The Branch is the Lord Jesus Christ, the righteous shoot promised through Jeremiah and Isaiah. The Branch springs up from the fallen stump of David, grows from obscurity, and reaches the nations. The text says twice that he shall build the temple of the Lord, and that repetition points beyond the rebuilt temple of Zechariah’s day to the glorious future temple connected with Christ’s reign. The Branch bears royal honor, sits and rules on his throne, and serves as priest on that same throne.

Christ brings together what the Old Testament normally kept distinct. Kings came through David, and priests came through Levi, but Christ is king and priest after the order of Melchizedek.
