Men's Leadership in Prayer: A Call to Action

1. "As the man of my house, I need to be leading first and foremost from this place of priority of prayer. And so today's message, ladies, you are going to listen, but men, I'm talking to you. Now, just because I'm talking to men, don't mean ladies. We shouldn't be listening for two reasons. One, y'all need to notice. Two, because what we're going to be talking about from Paul is not something that absorbs women from doing it, but it's an instruction to men to lead in the demonstration of it so that you all can follow our lead." 2. "And the reason that Jesus can say that, and we're getting somewhere. The reason that Jesus can say that is because Jesus has the ability to do what we struggle with, and that's seeing beyond the flesh into the spiritual. What do I mean by that? Well, Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 4, 4 that the God of this age has blinded the minds or the eyes of the unbelievers that the gospel is the gospel. And that's what he's saying. 3. "And the only way we will get the peace in our life that we desire to have in our life is when people transform from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. And Paul knows this all too well. He can instruct the church to do this first because Jesus said it. And so as long as Jesus said it, I don't need no experience to have to match it. 4. "And so what I want you to do is in the same way, pray for those individuals who make your life hard. Internal wolves and external unbelievers, whomever they are, pray for them that the Lord would do something in their life because the goal is not that God would smite them, but that he would save them. This is what Paul is saying. And when we begin to understand this, we will become people who will be more set to prioritize praying for our enemies than complaining about them and praying on them and talking about them and persecuting them." 5. "And so Paul says, that's the therefore I'm referencing. I told the church, I need y'all to pray for y'all enemies. I need y'all to humble yourself and stop matching aggression with aggression, anger with anger. And I know it's hard. It's not natural. When somebody does something to you, the natural response is get back. It's natural. And so this is not an easy thing. And so since it's not an easy thing, Paul doesn't absolve the church of the responsibility to do it. Instead, he says, hey, this stuff is going to be bad. This is going to be hard, church." 6. "The first response that we have is aggression with aggression, anger with anger, violence with violence. But Paul says, I need the men to demonstrate that in this spiritual battle, our war is not won by, closed fists, but it's won by closed hands and bent knees. I want the men in every place to pray, to stop leading by leaning on the power of the weapons of our flesh, but to start leading by leaning on the power of our weapons of our warfare, which is prayer." 7. "And so Paul says, I want men in every place to pray. And this is gender specific, right? He doesn't use anthropos, which is sometimes translated man in the Bible, which really means mankind. He used anor, which means male or husband. So he's specifically saying, I'm talking to men. And then he says, in pros topos, which means in every place. 8. "And so Paul says, men, let's do this, please. He's instructing men to no longer be spectators of prayer, but to be participant leaders of it. And listen, I'm not here with the men. I'm not here with the women. I'm not here with the men. What they say, I'm not here to beat you up. I'm here to build you up. Absolutely. And I'm also not here to coddle you.
