Bible ReadingPsalm 73“Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped.”
[06:13]“For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. And they say, ‘How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?’ Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches.”
[09:20]“All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. If I had said, ‘I will speak thus,’ I would have betrayed the generation of your children.”
[10:59]“But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms.”
[15:54]“When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory.”
[18:30]“Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. But for me, it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.”
[18:52]Ephesians 2:10“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
[02:36]Matthew 4:1-11“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’ But he answered, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”’”
[20:41]“Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “He will command his angels concerning you,” and “On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.”’ Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.”’ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, ‘All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.”’ Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.”
[22:16]Observation questions- What specific things about the wicked caused Asaph to become envious and nearly stumble in Psalm 73?
- How does Asaph’s statement, “All in vain have I kept my heart clean,” contrast with his opening statement that God is good to Israel? [09:20]
- What changes for Asaph after he enters the sanctuary of God, and what does not immediately change? [17:08]
- According to Psalm 73:23-26, what does God do for Asaph, and what does Asaph say God is to him? [18:30]
Interpretation questions- Why is envy of the wicked so spiritually dangerous for a believer? How can looking at another person’s apparent ease slowly lead someone to question God’s goodness?
- Asaph realizes that speaking out of his bitterness would “betray the generation of your children.” How might unchecked words, cynicism, or self-pity affect a believer’s family, friends, and church community? [10:59]
- Psalm 73 does not say that Asaph’s circumstances changed when he entered God’s sanctuary. Why can worship, Scripture, and Christian community change a person’s perspective even when the hard situation remains? [15:54]
- Jesus answered temptation with “It is written” rather than trying to prove Himself or satisfy His immediate needs. What does this show about the place of God’s Word when a believer feels pressured, misunderstood, or tempted to put self first? [21:40]
Application questions- Is there a situation in life right now that is tempting you to measure God’s goodness by how easy, fair, or successful things appear? What truth about God needs to become the lens through which you see that situation? [01:08]
- Have you recently compared your life with someone who seems to be prospering, succeeding, or avoiding trouble? What thoughts did that comparison produce in your heart, and how does Psalm 73 challenge those thoughts? [06:55]
- When disappointment builds up, what does “All in vain have I kept my heart clean” sound like in everyday language? Have you found yourself thinking that obedience, integrity, or serving God is not worth it? [09:24]
- Asaph’s turning point began when he remembered that his words would affect God’s people. Who could be strengthened or harmed by the way you speak about your current struggles? What would it look like to be honest without spreading bitterness? [14:52]
- Nearness to God is called the believer’s good, even when flesh and heart fail. What practical rhythms help you draw near to God when you are emotionally tired or discouraged—Scripture, prayer, gathering with believers, asking for help, or something else? [19:25]
- Jesus did not let hunger, pressure, or the demand to prove Himself control His response. In what area are you most tempted to protect yourself, prove yourself, or follow your feelings instead of submitting to what God has written? [22:28]
- Loving relationships need more than casual socializing; they also need truthful accountability. Is there a trusted believer who can help you hold your life up to God’s Word? How could you invite that kind of loving, grace-filled conversation? [23:08]
