We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. But now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.’ Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like that of bdellium. The people went about and gathered it and ground it in handmills or beat it in mortars and boiled it in pots and made cakes of it. And the taste of it was like the taste of cakes baked with oil. When the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell with it. Moses heard the people weeping throughout their clans, everyone at the door of his tent. And the anger of the Lord blazed hotly, and Moses was displeased. Moses said to the Lord, ‘Why have you dealt ill with your servant? And why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me? Did I conceive all this people? Did I give them birth, that you should say to me, “Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing child,” to the land that you swore to give their fathers? Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep before me and say, “Give us meat, that we may eat.” I am not able to carry all this people alone; the burden is too heavy for me. If you will treat me like this, kill me at once, if I find favor in your sight, that I may not see my wretchedness.’ And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. And I will come down and talk with you there. And I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them, and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you may not bear it yourself alone.’”

You shall not eat just one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days, but a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have rejected the Lord who is among you and have wept before him, saying, “Why did we come out of Egypt?”’” But Moses said, “The people among whom I am number six hundred thousand on foot, and you have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat a whole month!’ Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, and be enough for them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, and be enough for them?” And the Lord said to Moses, “Is the Lord's hand shortened? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not.””

And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, ‘Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?’ He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, ‘Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.’ One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, ‘There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?’ Jesus said, ‘Have the people sit down.’ Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, ‘Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.’ So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.”

- What words in Moses’ prayer show how overwhelmed he felt, and what solution did God give in response? [01:05:01]

- In Numbers 11:18-23, what does Moses start counting when God promises meat, and what question does God ask back to him? [01:18:22]
Interpretation questions- Moses says, “I am not able to carry all this people alone.” What does that reveal about godly leadership and about the danger of trying to carry a burden alone? [01:05:01]
- God does not reduce the calling for Israel; he shares the burden through the Spirit. What might that show about how God normally strengthens his people in seasons of pressure? [01:07:08]
- A person can be close to the work and still not be carrying much of the weight. Why is presence alone not the same thing as ownership in the life of the church? [01:09:08]
- Moses’ calculation leaves God’s power out of the equation. When does practical wisdom become unbelief, and how can that happen in ordinary Christian life? [01:21:06]
Application questions- Where does life currently feel like “promises from heaven in one hand and pressures from earth in the other”? In family, work, health, or faith, where is that tension most real right now? [01:26:03]
- Is there any area where the heart has started to sound like Israel—tired of God’s provision, restless, or tempted to look back at an old life as if it was better than it really was?
- What would it look like to carry real weight in the church instead of staying adjacent to the work? Is the next step more prayer, deeper care, practical service, financial generosity, initiating relationships, or something else? [01:12:21]
- Is there a place where life has been approached more like a consumer than a co-laborer? What would genuine ownership look like there? [01:13:27]
- Where has “meat math” or “me math” shaped the view of the future—only counting current resources, energy, or visible options? What might it look like to leave room for God’s action there? [01:21:33]
- Comfort is often easier than fulfillment. Where is the temptation right now to stay comfortable instead of becoming a builder? [01:14:14]
- Jesus paid the debt that sinners could never repay. For those who trust Christ, how does that change the way guilt, striving, and self-reliance are handled this week? [01:31:03]
