Day 2: Tomatoes in Fruit Salad: When Knowledge Needs Wisdom

Paul sets the church’s goal in Ephesians 4:13 as coming “to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” God gives apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to equip the saints, and the saints then do the work of ministry for the building up of Christ’s body. Paul joins knowledge, understanding, and wisdom because knowledge alone does not change a life. Knowledge can identify a tomato, understanding can know it is a fruit, and wisdom knows not to put it in fruit salad. The word of God must move from knowing, to understanding, to actual application. Paul wants Christians to walk worthy of the Lord, please Him in every way, bear good fruit, and grow in the knowledge of God.

Perfection in Ephesians 4 does not mean moral flawlessness. Maturity means becoming complete and reaching the intended goal. The mature man pictures not only individual Christians but the whole church becoming a stable, unified, mature body under Christ its head. Christ is the measuring stick, not another congregation, old attendance numbers, Facebook, or the person in the mirror. Faith fuels growth, and growth presses the church toward the fullness of Christ. Christ calls every person to look honestly at that measure, obey the gospel, bring sin into the light, and keep growing toward His holiness, love, truth, and life.
