Measuring Spiritual Growth: Focus on Christ, Not Comparison
Devotional
Day 1: Christ's Evaluation Over Human Comparison
In our spiritual journey, it is essential to remember that our ultimate evaluation comes from Jesus Christ, not from comparing ourselves with others. Just as a student cannot grade their own paper, we cannot measure our spiritual progress by looking at others. When we reach the end of our lives, we will present our life's work to Jesus, and it is His assessment that truly matters. Pride often creeps into our lives when we start comparing ourselves with others, but this is a path that leads to misunderstanding and spiritual blindness. By focusing on our personal relationship with Jesus, we maintain humility and a clear perspective on our spiritual growth. [11:45]
"For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ." (Galatians 1:10, ESV)
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you find yourself comparing to others, and how can you shift your focus to seeking Christ's approval instead?
Day 2: True Understanding Through Christ
Pride arises when we compare ourselves with others, but true spiritual understanding comes from measuring ourselves against Jesus. The Apostle Paul understood this well, as he did not compare himself with other apostles or believers. Instead, he measured himself against Jesus, which led him to see himself as the greatest sinner, highlighting the importance of humility. This perspective leads to a deeper awareness of our need for His grace and helps us to grow in spiritual maturity. [13:22]
"Let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor." (Galatians 6:4, ESV)
Reflection: How can you practice measuring your spiritual growth against Jesus rather than others, and what steps can you take to cultivate humility in your daily life?
Day 3: Embracing Our Unique Roles
Each believer is a unique part of Christ's body, and we should embrace our individual roles and gifts. Trying to be like someone else diminishes the unique contribution we are meant to make. Just as a finger should not try to become a tongue, we should embrace our unique gifts and roles within the body of Christ. Every member, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, is vital to the whole. [17:34]
"For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another." (Romans 12:4-5, ESV)
Reflection: What unique gifts and roles has God given you, and how can you use them to serve the body of Christ more effectively?
Day 4: The Importance of Every Member
Every member of the body of Christ, no matter how small, is important. Just as the toes are essential for balance, every believer plays a crucial role in the church. We should not strive to be like someone else but instead recognize the value of our own contributions. By doing so, we honor the diversity and unity within the body of Christ. [18:58]
"On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable." (1 Corinthians 12:22, ESV)
Reflection: How can you better appreciate and support the roles of others in your church community, recognizing their importance in the body of Christ?
Day 5: Giving Glory to God
We must give God the glory for all the blessings in our lives. Acknowledging His hand in our successes and well-being keeps us humble and grateful. Just as Eli's sons were punished for taking what was meant for God, we too must be careful to give God the glory in all things. Whether it's our health, our job security, or any other blessing, we must acknowledge that it is God who deserves the credit. [20:31]
"Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!" (Psalm 115:1, ESV)
Reflection: What specific blessings in your life can you acknowledge as coming from God today, and how can you give Him the glory for them?
Sermon Summary
In our journey of faith, it's crucial to remember that our ultimate evaluation comes from Jesus Christ. Just as a student cannot grade their own paper, we cannot measure our spiritual progress by comparing ourselves to others. When we reach the end of our lives, we will present our life's work to Jesus, and it is His assessment that truly matters. Pride often creeps into our lives when we start comparing ourselves with others, but this is a path that leads to misunderstanding and spiritual blindness. The Apostle Paul, a great figure in the early church, understood this well. He did not compare himself with other apostles or believers. Instead, he measured himself against Jesus, which led him to see himself as the greatest sinner, highlighting the importance of humility.
Paul's insight in 2 Corinthians 10 reminds us that comparing ourselves with others is a sign of a lack of understanding. True spiritual understanding comes when we compare ourselves only with Jesus. Each of us is a unique part of Christ's body, and we should not strive to be like someone else. Just as a finger should not try to become a tongue, we should embrace our unique gifts and roles within the body of Christ. Every member, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, is vital to the whole.
Furthermore, we must never touch the glory that belongs to God. Just as Eli's sons were punished for taking what was meant for God, we too must be careful to give God the glory in all things. Whether it's our health, our job security, or any other blessing, we must acknowledge that it is God who deserves the credit. By doing so, we maintain a posture of humility and gratitude, recognizing that all good things come from Him.

Sermon Clips
When we come to the end of our life, examination will be over here. Then we hand over our paper to Jesus Christ. [00:11:45]
It is impossible to be proud if you keep looking at Jesus. Let me tell you that all pride comes into your life because you compare yourself with some other brothers. [00:13:22]
He didn't compare himself with the other apostles and the other believers. When he looked at Jesus, he said, "Oh, I'm not a great apostle." When he compared himself with Jesus, "I'm not even such a good believer. I'm worse than the worst one." [00:14:34]
When he compared himself with Jesus, oh, he said, "Oh Lord, I am the greatest sinner in the world." [00:14:49]
But when they measure themselves with each other and compare themselves with each other, they are without understanding. [00:15:16]
If you only compare yourself with Jesus every day, you're a person with spiritual understanding. [00:16:41]
If, for example, the finger tries to become like the tongue, you know we are Christ's body now. Each of us is like a member in Christ. But don't try to become a tongue. [00:17:34]
Don't compare yourself. Don't try to be like somebody else. For many years, I have told people, "Please don't try to preach like me." You be yourself. God has given me a gift. God has given you another gift. [00:17:50]
Even the small ten toes on our feet are also very important. You may think those ten toes are very unimportant, but any doctor will tell you that if you remove those ten toes, you will not be able to stand properly. [00:18:58]
God has made it like that so that you realize even though small, believers in your church are very, very important. [00:19:21]
Never touch the glory of God because if we try to take what belongs to God, God will punish us. [00:19:43]
Lord, if things are going well in my life, I give you the glory. If I have not lost my job when many people are losing their jobs, I give you the credit. [00:20:06]
