The Master Gardener

Jesus calls Himself “the true vine” in John 15, and that claim turns the old pride of Israel on its head. Israel had long seen itself as God’s vine, marked out by heritage, nation, and calling. Jesus says the point is no longer where anybody came from, how long anybody has been around, or what family line anybody can claim. He alone is the real, authentic, original vine, and the Father is the gardener.

The Father cuts off branches that bear no fruit, and He prunes fruitful branches so they can bear more. Pruning does not feel good, because God never seems to go after the spot a person wants Him to take. God goes after the area that is inhibiting growth, love, joy, and the fruit of the Spirit. The gardener’s cutting is not about comparison with somebody else. The gardener keeps asking one question: “Will you let Me have that?”

Jesus repeats the word remain again and again because remaining is the whole deal. Remaining means abiding, staying, resting, persisting, and being at home with Jesus. Being at home with Jesus does not mean getting lazy. A family member in a home has responsibilities because that person belongs there. Obedience does not earn a place in the family, but obedience grows out of living in the family.

The vine produces fruit through branches that stay connected. A rose bush does not strain to make roses, and soybeans are not supposed to produce corn. Branches connected to Jesus produce Jesus’ fruit. That fruit shows up in confident prayer, growing love for others, real joy, and a willingness to share in what Jesus experienced, including rejection for His name. Joy is not merely an emotion. Joy is an attitude that grows from being with Jesus. Christians must stand for truth without becoming pickle Christians, cactuses, or porcupines who are too prickly for anybody to hear the gospel.

Jesus calls His disciples friends, not merely servants. Friendship with Jesus means being known all the way down, loved anyway, and ready to obey when He speaks. The warning is sobering: branches without fruit are cut off. Yet Jesus directs attention away from endless debates and toward the evidence of abiding year after year: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. Faithfulness matters more than being flashy, successful, or beautiful.

Jesus calls His people to pray, read the Word, live with other believers, and share Him with somebody else. The church must submit to the One greater than itself, trust the master gardener, and make room for a coming reawakening, perhaps led by its children.
