Mary's Faith: Embracing God's Grace and Purpose
Summary
In today's message, we explored the profound narrative of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as depicted in the Gospel of Luke. We began by emphasizing the importance of understanding the scriptures as the true word of God, not merely stories passed down through generations. This foundation is crucial for our faith, as it assures us of the truthfulness of the biblical accounts, including the miraculous events surrounding the birth of Jesus.
We delved into the context of Mary's life, highlighting her humble beginnings in the obscure town of Nazareth. Despite its insignificance, Nazareth played a pivotal role in fulfilling the prophecies about the Messiah. Mary's virginity and betrothal to Joseph were significant, aligning with the prophecies that the Messiah would be born of a virgin and from the lineage of David. This underscores the divine orchestration of events leading to the birth of Jesus.
The angel Gabriel's announcement to Mary was a moment of divine favor, not because of her inherent qualities, but because of God's grace. This grace is available to all of us through Jesus Christ. Mary's response to Gabriel's message was one of faith and obedience, despite the potential risks and societal repercussions. Her willingness to be part of God's plan exemplifies a profound trust in God's promises and purposes.
We also reflected on the nature of God's interventions, which often defy human logic and understanding. The conception of Jesus was a supernatural act, emphasizing His deity and sinlessness. This miraculous event reminds us that with God, nothing is impossible. When we align ourselves with God's will, we become part of His extraordinary plans, even when they seem daunting or improbable.
Finally, we are reminded that following Jesus requires faith and obedience, much like Mary's response. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, we can trust in God's goodness and His plans for our lives. As we respond to God's word, we are invited to participate in His work, finding peace and satisfaction in His presence.

Quotes
Now, I like to read this passage before my sermons from time to time because it's really important to be reminded of what it is that we're reading. The Bible, the scriptures are not... It's not just a bunch of words that a bunch of men wrote down. And it's not a collection of stories that were necessarily passed down from generation to generation and somebody put it down. [00:48:53] (28 seconds)
It is so obscure that it's not even mentioned in the Old Testament. Nobody knows about it. Nobody cares about it. Up until this moment, people really kind of look down on Nazareth the way that, you know, I don't know. I have discovered that people from Virginia look down on people from West Virginia. People from Texas look down on people from Oklahoma. People from New Jersey look down on Newark. It's just crazy, right? [00:54:31] (33 seconds)
In the Gospel of Matthew and in the Gospel of Luke, the writers are very emphatic to emphasize that Mary's condition is a virgin because when Jesus was conceived, it emphasizes his deity. It emphasizes his sinlessness because he was not conceived. He was not conceived in sin. But he is perfect and holy. And it is otherwise indescribable. [00:56:40] (33 seconds)
Mary, like us now, was a recipient of God's grace. Grace let me repeat that Mary, like us, was a recipient of God's grace. She was not filled with grace to dispense to others that grace was placed upon her through God so God did not host a competition looking for the perfect woman in Israel he did not scour the world and Mary won the rose right he selected her because of all the things that connected to the prophecy but she herself was just a girl from Nazareth. [01:00:26] (66 seconds)
And the angel answered her, the Holy Spirit will come upon you. And the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the child to be born will be called Holy, the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son. And this is a six month with her who was called barren for nothing will be impossible with God. [01:07:25] (24 seconds)
Even if it seems crazy and defies logic, when we work in concert with God and we are obediently, obedient to his outline and design, the impossible becomes very possible. Who would risk their life to give birth to a baby that might be the long -awaited Messiah? For Mary, this is a real possibility. [01:10:41] (28 seconds)
But when we follow Jesus, when we are aligned with God's plan, then we can do it with confidence that God makes the impossible possible. And we see Mary's reply. She says, Behold, I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be to me according to your word. Amen. What a beautiful picture of obedience, right? [01:12:21] (42 seconds)
We know that we can find favor with God because of what Jesus has done for us. We are not of our own accord able to be righteous and holy and just. That's all on God. But because of Jesus and because of our relationship with him, we are able to find favor with God just as Mary did. [01:15:38] (32 seconds)
And he wants nothing but good. And his plans are going to come to fruition sometimes in spite of our efforts. So it's best for us to join with him and allow it. When our plans go wrong, look to him, see where he is, see what he's doing, and join with him and find peace and satisfaction. [01:16:58] (26 seconds)
