Bible readingMark 9:14–29 (ESV)
And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”
Observation questions- According to the text, what chaotic scene did Jesus, Peter, James, and John walk into immediately after coming down from the mountain?
- In the sermon, what was the specific reason given for why the disciples failed to cast out the spirit, noting that "dependence turned into assumption"? [10:56]
- When the father says to Jesus, "If you can do anything, have compassion on us," how does Jesus respond, and what famous admission does the father make in return?
- After the spirit was cast out, the boy appeared to be dead. What did Jesus do to restore him?
Interpretation questions- The sermon suggests that the disciples failed because they tried to do God's work without God's presence. Why is it so easy for us to let spiritual habits and knowing "Christian language" replace actual prayerful intimacy with God? [11:09]
- The father’s prayer is "I believe; help my unbelief." The sermon describes this as the "real tension of walking with Jesus." Why is this mixture of faith and struggle often a more accurate picture of a relationship with God than perfect certainty? [17:31]
- Mark describes the boy as looking like a corpse before Jesus takes him by the hand and lifts him up. How does this imagery point beyond just a physical healing to the ultimate work of resurrection that Jesus came to accomplish? [25:30]
Application questions- Disappointment has a way of training our hearts to stop expecting things. As we look at the start of a new year, are there areas where you are afraid to get your hopes up because you are tired of being disappointed? [02:21]
- The father’s plea, "If you can," wasn't arrogance but exhaustion. It is the voice of someone who has protected their heart because hope feels dangerous. In your current season, are you praying with confidence or with caution? [15:49]
- We don't have to choose between faith and honesty; we can bring our "I believe" and our "help my unbelief" to God simultaneously. What is one specific struggle or doubt you need to be honest about with God (and perhaps this group) today? [23:42]
- The disciples couldn't cast out the spirit because they relied on their past victories and routines rather than fresh dependence on God. Where in your life have you drifted from "prayerful dependence" into just "knowing the routine"? [10:56]
- Jesus specializes in taking what looks dead and lifting it up. Is there a relationship, a dream, or an area of your faith that feels "dead" right now? What would it look like to invite Jesus to touch that specific area this week? [26:48]
- Jesus taught that some battles are only won through prayer (and fasting), which signals deep dependence. Is there a "stronghold" or situation in your life right now that you have been trying to fix with effort and busyness, but actually requires you to stop and surrender it to God in prayer? [28:02]
