#DontSettleFor30Percent
“So maybe the question today is not, can you see Jesus? Maybe the question is, how clearly do you see him? How brightly do you see Jesus? The danger is not always walking around life being spiritually blind. The danger is walking around life being comfortable, seeing Jesus at 30%. That's the danger. Don't settle for 30%. You don't have to understand everything about Jesus today to follow Jesus. By the way, you can't understand everything about Jesus. But don't stop looking for Jesus. The longer you walk with him, I do believe, the clearer he he comes in the picture, the brighter he gets, the more in focus he starts to see. And so don't walk away. Don't short circuit what Jesus is doing in your life. There's more. Keep leaning in. Let Jesus keep coming into focus for you.”

#BewareSpiritualHypocrisy
“Think about the yeast for a second. What does yeast do? It kind of ferments and sours everything that it touches. And it doesn't just work a little bit in the batch. It spreads its way through the whole thing. In other words, it doesn't stay put. If you put it in one place, it's not gonna stay there. It works throughout the whole batch. And Jesus' point was watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees. Meaning, not only their doctrine, not only their teachings, but also their hypocrisy. It doesn't just stay put. It spreads everywhere. Their deception, their play acting, trying to be super spiritual for others to see. The heart of the Pharisee does not stay put. It sours everything it touches.”

#SeeJesusClearly
“And that's exactly where the disciples were at this moment. They see Jesus. Listen, they believe in Jesus. These guys had literally left everything to follow Jesus. It's not like they didn't understand who he was, they just weren't seeing him clearly. They were spiritually blind. They've watched him heal people. They've watched him cast out demons. They've watched him walk on water. They've watched him feed thousands of people twice. They see Jesus, but they don't see him clearly. They're only seeing about 30% Jesus. They didn't need a different version, a new version of Jesus in front of them. Listen, they just needed a clearer version of the Jesus that was already there. They just needed to see him clearly for who he was.”

#AvoidBlurryFaith
“Here's what scares me about that DVD screen in our van. We can get used to seeing things a little blurry, can't we? We can get used to seeing things a little dimly, can't we? We can get used to not even knowing what we're missing out on, and spiritually, we can do the same thing. We can get used to a blurry picture of Jesus. We can get used to a dim view of Jesus. Like, we can sorta see enough where we come to church. We can sorta see enough to call ourselves Christians. We can sorta see enough to sing the songs that we see, but we aren't seeing clearly. We're seeing people, but they're kinda like trees walking around. And yet, Jesus keeps inviting us to see him more clearly, to keep turning up that brightness more and more because there's always more to be seen.”

#FaithOverAnswers
“And I say that because sometimes we can mistakenly assume that if I had real faith, if I had true faith, then I would understand everything there is to understand about God and Jesus. I've been following Jesus for ten, twenty, thirty years more. I should know all the things that there is to know. My faith should be at a level that is spiritually mature. Why? Because we think spiritual maturity means that we should have more of our questions answered than unanswered questions.”

#ReligionVsRelationship
“The disciples believed, or the Pharisees rather believed in the one true God. It wasn't that that was the problem. The problem is what they added to that belief. They added rules and rituals and ceremonies and regulations, all which put extreme restrictions on God's people. Sure, love God and do all of these things. And what it created, what it led to was people thinking that their good behavior is what made them acceptable to God. Do the good things. the right things. Oh, and by the way, don't do the wrong things. It led to having an external religion focused on external activity, not an inward change of heart.”

#FaithInTheUnseen
“What we have been promised has nothing to do with this world other than Jesus has already overcome it. But it has everything to do with the next world. So what's our answer? What do we do? Well, we stay close to God. We keep listening. We keep learning. We keep opening scripture. We keep praying. We keep trusting. We keep leaning in. We keep following. We keep choosing to to do life with others. Having faith in the things that you cannot see. That's literally how chapter 11 in Hebrew starts. It says, faith is when we are completely confident in the things that we cannot even see. That's faith. You know, how can you be confident in something you don't see? Faith. That's what it means.”

#SelfRighteousnessBlinds
“It also led to having an attitude of self righteousness because think about it. If I'm walking through life doing all the right things and avoiding doing the wrong things, then it's really easy for me to look down on anyone not doing the right things or even doing the wrong things. The things that I've decided are wrong, at least. It led to a dependence on self instead of a dependence on God. It led to a hardening of the heart and spiritual blindness, and spiritual blindness is what Mark is getting at here. The disciples, they were being spiritually blind here. They literally had seen Jesus do a supernatural event twice involving bread. And here they are missing the point. They still don't understand what he is capable of. Look at verse 17.”
