Mark 1:14-28 - The Authority of Jesus Christ- Shebu John

Mark begins with a new beginning, the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Mark sets Jesus before the early followers of Christ, and before the church today, as the one whose words are not made up stories but true news. John the Baptist has already declared that one more powerful is coming, and Jesus now comes into Galilee proclaiming that the time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God has come near, and people must repent and believe the good news.

Jesus declares a kingdom with loving authority. The kingdom is not advice about something still needing to be done. The kingdom is news about something God has done, and the only fitting response is repentance and faith. Jesus’ call to repent is not a cold religious demand. Jesus’ call is a gracious summons to turn away from living against God and to come under the loving authority of the true King.

Mark then shows Jesus’ authority over people. Jesus sees Simon, Andrew, James, and John, and Jesus says, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” The call is an invitation, but it is also a command. The fishermen are not hobbyists with spare time. Their nets are their bread and butter, their work, their security. Yet Jesus’ voice changes the whole trajectory of their lives. Jesus does not need them, because the creator of the universe is dependent on no one, but Jesus invites image bearers into his mission.

Jesus’ authority also appears in his teaching. The people in the synagogue are amazed because Jesus teaches as one who has authority, unlike the scribes. The scribes speak by leaning on other authorities, but Jesus speaks with his own authority, because Jesus is the beloved Son of the Father. Jesus does not need footnotes. His words carry the directness of the King.

Jesus’ authority finally confronts the unclean spirit. The demon knows Jesus as “the Holy One of God” and knows that Jesus has come to destroy the powers of evil. Jesus silences the demon and commands it to come out. Even the unclean spirits obey because when Christ speaks, creation listens. Jesus’ authority is beautiful, perfect, secure, and costly. The safest place for any person is not self-rule, but life under the loving authority of the King who came to serve.
