Mark opens with the announcement that the waiting is over: “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” The beginning points back to Genesis, where God brought light into darkness, and now God’s redemptive work enters its decisive chapter in Christ. The gospel is news before it is advice. Jesus is not God’s backup plan for a broken world, but the promised King at the center of God’s plan from the beginning.

Jesus does not conquer like earthly kings. Jesus conquers through suffering, serving, and finally giving His life as a ransom for many.

The Spirit then drives Jesus into the wilderness, where Satan tempts Him for forty days. Jesus succeeds where Adam failed in the garden and where Israel failed in the wilderness. Jesus stands faithful where sinners have wandered and fallen. Christ’s righteousness is the hope of sinners because His faithfulness does not depend on their performance.

Hebrews shows that the faithful King does not stand over struggling people saying, “How could you fail again?” Jesus sympathizes with weakness, yet remains without sin. Shame tells sinners to hide, but the throne of grace invites them to run to Christ for mercy and help. The promised, revealed, and faithful King calls every heart to surrender the places where it still tries to rule.

Do you hear the invitation? It doesn't say when things go wrong, have to stay away because he's too perfect. It says, no, when you're tempted, what do you do? You run to Jesus. And kids and adults, when you've sinned and you messed up, you don't run away, you go to Jesus.”

I just need to put up more things that I can be able to conquer these temptations. But that isn't the gospel. Jesus certainly is our example. We want to mirror that or even call to follow his lead. But he is more than an example. He is our faithful representative. He remains faithful where we have wandered. He stands where we have fallen. And his faithfulness is good news for sinners,”
