A Man After God's Heart | Father's Day 2206

Father’s Day starts with both honor and honesty. The empty chair says that the day can carry grief, absence, loss, and pain, but God stands as the perfect heavenly Father who meets that empty place with comfort and peace. The call to men is not a beatdown, but a lifting up into purpose, love, restoration, and sending.

Acts 13 names David as “a man after my own heart,” and that word from God does not mean David was perfect. David killed Goliath, wrote Psalms, led Israel, and carried real victories, but David also sinned publicly, wounded others, and brought pain into his family and nation. David’s life shows that a man after God’s heart is not a perfect man, but a pursuing man.

David’s heart was formed in private before it was revealed in public. The pasture, the sheep, the hidden place, and the overlooked youngest son became the place where God saw what others missed. Temptation is real, but God is faithful and gives a way out. Elevation becomes dangerous when blessing turns into entitlement, when a man forgets dependence on God.

David’s failure with Bathsheba does not minimize sin, but it magnifies grace. Nathan’s confrontation led David to say, “I have sinned against the Lord,” and Psalm 51 became the prayer of a broken man who returned instead of running. God corrected David, restored David, and continued to use David.

David’s work also mattered to God. The field prepared him for Goliath, and faithful hidden work became worship unto the Lord. God made men with assignment, work, marriage, fatherhood, and leadership. A man after God’s heart comes back to prayer, the word, humility, integrity, family, and the Father, because God is not finished with him.
