Acts 2:42 gives the pattern: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.” The apostolic church was not just doing church anyhow, Bazalwan. The church was an entity where the presence of God dwells, not a building, not an auditorium, not just a gathering, but the body that Christ said he will build.

Christ is the head of the body, and in him all things hold together. The church carries Christ into the world, so a person does not have to go to heaven to see Jesus, but must see Jesus through the church. The church is an ambassador of heaven, a place where worship rises, spiritual gifts edify, believers mature, and lives are transformed. God entrusted the church, not isolated individuals, with the work of showing the wisdom of God and creating an atmosphere where people encounter him.

God is a God of patterns. Noah received the pattern for the ark. Moses received the pattern for the ark of the covenant. The church that wants power, miracles, salvation, and impact like the book of Acts must go back to the apostolic pattern. A church that wants to turn its Jerusalem upside down must become a teaching church, because people can tolerate a pulpit that is not teaching if the building, children’s church, music, and parking look nice. But the standard cannot be fancy things. The standard must be the Word.

The apostles’ doctrine included repentance, and also faith in Jesus Christ. Paul says in Romans 10 that righteousness by faith does not ask who will go up to heaven to bring Christ down, or who will go into the abyss to bring Christ up. Christ already came. Christ already died. Christ already rose. The work has already been done, and salvation has been brought near, in the mouth and in the heart.

Faith in Jesus Christ is not shallow believing for blessings, power, miracles, or wonders. Simon the sorcerer believed in a way that wanted power, but no conviction was there. True faith has conviction: “I am a sinner, I need a Savior, without a Savior I am nothing.” The law can show sin, but the law cannot clean sin. Romans 3 shuts every mouth and says no one will be justified by works of the law. Grace alone saves, and the apostolic word remains simple and powerful: believe in the heart, confess with the mouth, and call on the name of the Lord.
