John 14 meets troubled hearts with the steady words of Jesus: “Let not your heart be troubled.” Death has a way of seriousing a person up. Death clears out the trivial, brings the important things back into view, and reminds every person that a birth certificate has a starting date but no visible expiration date. Maladies come in every shape and size: sickness in the body, disorder in a family, sin in a society, fear in the mind, and unbelief in the heart.

Jesus Christ was acquainted with grief, but He was also acquainted with death. Isaiah 53 shows that He bore griefs and carried sorrows, not because He deserved judgment, but because He was wounded for transgressions and bruised for iniquities. Christ’s death makes it possible for His people to stand before God holy, unblameable, and unreproveable. Death, for the Christian, is not the end of life. Death is a doorway into the life that is really life.

The disciples faced their own malady of messiness when Jesus spoke of betrayal, the cross, and His departure. Their faith was about to be tested, and Jesus did not give them optimistic wishes or tell them to force tomorrow into their preferred mold. Jesus gave them Himself. “Ye believe in God, believe also in me” makes plain that the Son is not separate from the Father’s purposes. Christ and the Father are one, and faith in Christ is faith in God come in the flesh.

The Father’s house holds many dwelling places, not merely oversized earthly mansions meant to satisfy earthly appetites. The great reward is that Christ prepares a place so His people may be where He is. The beauty of heaven is not chiefly a room to possess, but the Father’s house itself, fellowship with the Father and the Son, righteousness without sin, and life that stretches out forever.

This present life is but the womb of eternity. Seventy, eighty, or even one hundred years cannot compare to the everlasting life Christ offers. Jesus alone is the way, the truth, and the life. No parallel road can reach the Father’s house. Human effort, religious imagination, and self-made truth all fall short. Repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ bring salvation, while those who know Him are called to walk the better path, redeem their time, and keep themselves in the love of God.
