Discipled 4 - Making Disciples: Reproducing Followers of Christ

Jesus sends the church into the world under a clear banner from Matthew 16 and 28. Peter’s confession of Christ as “the Son of the living God” becomes the rock, not of a man, but of a revelation on which Christ himself says, “I will build my church.” The text hands agency to Jesus as Builder and turns the church outward in confidence that “the gates of hell will not prevail.” The image is not a scared people holding a line, but an advancing force storming gates. The mission is conquest by gospel, aimed to populate heaven, because life outside of Christ heads toward a loveless, joyless, peace-less eternity. Amen.

Matthew 28 adds the necessary engine room. “All authority in heaven and on earth” rests on Jesus, and from that authority he deputizes his people. Authority is not a toy for a cushy life. It represents the King. Like a traffic officer’s badge, it is borrowed weight to act for the government. In kingdom terms, it leads husbands to love like Christ and wives to submit “as to the Lord,” because real headship bleeds for another and real submission answers to Jesus first. Using authority for self gratifies the flesh and hollows out future obedience.

“Make disciples” carries both the active and the passive load. Actively, the command enrolls someone as a scholar, trains that person, and walks with them as an apprentice. Passively, a believer becomes a pupil who submits to formation, far more than four hours a month. A challenge culture is normal Christianity. Faith grows where steel meets steel, where serving, growth tracks, and shared life sharpen conviction. “Teaching” is not information dump. The goal is obedience, because “obey” here means to guard and protect the implanted word so it is not stolen. Free people free people. Slaves keep others enslaved.

Pruning is love in action. The Gardener cuts not only what is dead, but also some good growth so better fruit can emerge. Expect pain. Expect opposition. The god of this world wars against the body, limb by limb, to stop reproduction. Yet maturity naturally reproduces. In the world it is strange when adults never bear children; in the church it has become normal. The gospel calls that abnormal. The Great Commission refuses dead-end ministries and makes discipleship the goal so the process never ends. Christ’s final word stands behind it all. “I am with you always.” The presence carries assignment. The next step is the step of obedience.
