Making a U-Turn: Embracing Transformation in Christ

Summary

### Summary

Welcome, everyone! Today is Baptism Sunday, a day filled with excitement and anticipation. Some of you have already decided to get baptized, while others may find themselves making that decision today, perhaps unexpectedly. God has a way of nudging us, encouraging us, and leading us to encounters with Jesus that we never saw coming.

Let's start with a question: Have you ever found yourself heading in the wrong direction, whether on a freeway or in life? Sometimes, we need to make a U-turn to get back on the right path. Spiritually, this means recognizing that we are moving away from God and deciding to turn back towards Him. Jesus spoke about this when He said, "The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way." Many of us have been on that road, and some of you might be on it right now, knowingly or unknowingly.

Today, we are diving into Acts chapter 8, where we see the story of Saul, a man who was fervently persecuting Christians. Saul was on a mission to destroy the church, going from house to house, dragging off men and women and putting them in prison. He was heading in the wrong direction, but God had a different plan for him.

As Saul neared Damascus, a light from heaven flashed around him, and he fell to the ground. He heard a voice saying, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" Saul asked, "Who are you, Lord?" The voice replied, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do." This divine encounter was a turning point for Saul. He was blinded by the glory of Jesus and led into Damascus, where he spent three days in darkness, reflecting on his life and the direction he had been heading.

During this time, God spoke to a disciple named Ananias, instructing him to go to Saul and restore his sight. Ananias was understandably hesitant, knowing Saul's reputation as a persecutor. But God assured him that Saul had made a U-turn and was now part of God's plan. Ananias obeyed, and when he met Saul, he addressed him as "Brother Saul," signifying the transformation that had taken place. Saul's sight was restored, and he was filled with the Holy Spirit. He got up and was baptized, symbolizing his new direction and commitment to Jesus.

Saul's transformation was immediate and profound. He began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God, astonishing those who knew him as a persecutor. His life had taken a complete 180-degree turn. This is how you know your U-turn is legit: your life will change. Your thoughts, actions, and priorities will shift as you align yourself with God's will.

The question for us today is, will you make a U-turn? Will you acknowledge the road you are on and the choices you are making that lead you away from God? Will you surrender your excuses, resistance, and pain to embrace the sacrificial love of Jesus? Will you say yes to Jesus today?

Lord Jesus, thank you for revealing the truth to us, for removing the scales from our eyes, and for inviting us into a new life with you. For those who have just said yes to you, encourage them, challenge them, and guide them to take the next step of baptism. We celebrate everything you have done and will do in our lives. Amen.

Day 1: Recognizing the Need for a U-Turn
Sometimes, we find ourselves heading in the wrong direction, both in life and spiritually. Just as Saul needed a dramatic encounter with Jesus to realize he was on the wrong path, we too must recognize when we are spiritually off course. This realization requires humility and the willingness to admit that we need to change. A U-turn is not just a minor adjustment; it is a complete change of direction towards God. It involves acknowledging our mistakes, repenting, and making a conscious decision to follow Jesus.

Jesus spoke about the broad road that leads to destruction and the narrow path that leads to life. Many of us have been on that broad road, knowingly or unknowingly. Today, we are invited to examine our lives and identify areas where we need to make a U-turn. This is a call to turn away from sin and turn towards God, embracing His love and forgiveness.

Matthew 7:13-14 (ESV): "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few."

Reflection: What specific areas of your life do you recognize as needing a U-turn? How can you begin to make that change today? [02:19]

Day 2: Embracing Divine Encounters
Saul's encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus was life-changing. It was a moment of divine intervention that led to his transformation from a persecutor of Christians to a fervent follower of Christ. Such encounters are often unexpected and can come in various forms, but they always lead to profound change. These moments are opportunities for us to experience God's grace and power in a personal and transformative way.

Divine encounters can happen through prayer, reading the Bible, worship, or even through other people. They are moments when God reveals Himself to us in a way that changes our hearts and minds. When we are open to these encounters, we allow God to work in us and through us, leading us to a deeper relationship with Him.

Acts 9:3-6 (ESV): "Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?' And he said, 'Who are you, Lord?' And he said, 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.'"

Reflection: Can you recall a moment when you experienced a divine encounter? How did it change your perspective or direction in life? [11:04]

Day 3: The Importance of Community
Ananias played a crucial role in Saul's transformation by obeying God's command to restore Saul's sight and welcome him into the Christian community. This act of obedience and acceptance highlights the importance of community in our spiritual journeys. We need others to guide, support, and affirm our new direction in Christ.

Community provides accountability, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. It is within the community that we grow, learn, and are challenged to live out our faith. Ananias' willingness to embrace Saul, despite his past, demonstrates the power of forgiveness and the importance of welcoming others into the fold of God's family.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV): "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."

Reflection: How can you be an Ananias to someone in your community? What steps can you take to support and encourage others in their spiritual journey? [21:47]

Day 4: Evidence of a Genuine U-Turn
A genuine U-turn in our spiritual lives is evidenced by a noticeable change in our behavior, priorities, and purpose. Saul immediately began preaching about Jesus, astonishing those who knew his past. When we truly turn towards God, our lives will reflect that change in tangible ways. Our thoughts, actions, and priorities will shift as we align ourselves with God's will.

This transformation is not just about outward behavior but also about an inward change of heart. It involves a renewed mind and a commitment to live according to God's principles. The evidence of a genuine U-turn is seen in our daily lives as we seek to honor God in all that we do.

Ephesians 4:22-24 (ESV): "To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness."

Reflection: In what ways has your life changed since you decided to follow Jesus? Are there areas where you still need to see transformation? [25:30]

Day 5: The Invitation to Make a U-Turn
The call to make a U-turn is a personal invitation from Jesus to each of us. It requires us to acknowledge our current path, surrender our resistance, and embrace the love and forgiveness that Jesus offers. This decision leads to a new identity as children of God and a life filled with purpose and direction.

Jesus invites us to leave behind our old ways and follow Him. This invitation is not just a one-time decision but a daily commitment to live for Him. It involves surrendering our will to His and trusting Him to lead us on the right path. As we respond to this invitation, we experience the fullness of life that Jesus promises.

Matthew 16:24-25 (ESV): "Then Jesus told his disciples, 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.'"

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you find yourself holding back from surrendering to Jesus? What would surrendering this area to Him actually look like in terms of daily habits? [27:21]

1. "What if you are heading in the wrong direction spiritually? And I'm not talking about a little diversion. I'm not talking about, well, I was undisciplined. I haven't been praying as much. I haven't been, you know, reading my Bible as much. I'm talking about a path. I'm talking about a road. I'm talking about a choice where God is over here and you decide to walk away from God, to move in the opposite direction of God, because you want to live, the way that we want to live. We don't want anybody to tell us anything about that and nothing is going to stop us from heading our way." [03:54](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

However you, however he did it, he does it in different ways." [12:38](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

You'd never heard about Jesus' love for you, His sacrifice on the cross for you, how much He wants to be in relationship with you, and you discovered that, and boom, that changed everything. For some of you, it was a loss. You lost a parent, or you lost a spouse, or you lost a child, and you went into a deep, dark hole. And then somebody began to love you and encourage you, and show you the power of Jesus and how he can heal your heart and how you could be reunited maybe with your loved one in heaven one day. And that was the thing that changed everything for you." [14:03](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

Will you acknowledge the road that you're on, the direction you're taking, the choices that you're making, are leading you further and further and further and further away from God and will ultimately lead you separated from God for all eternity? Will you acknowledge that? I'm on the wrong road. Will you understand and let go of all of your excuses and all of your resistance and, and maybe some of the pain that's been blocking you from turning to God and just surrender all of that to him?" 1. "For three days, he was blind and did not eat or drink anything. So this is a very, very powerful encounter. And when Paul comes off of this encounter, he can't see. Why can't he see? Well, one, he was confronted with the blazing glory of Jesus. And so when people tell me sometimes like, hey, I saw Jesus, you know, the other day. And I'm like, did you fall on your face? And they're like, no. I'm like, well, then you didn't see Jesus. Because when you encounter the risen Jesus in all of his glory, it's going to humble you. It might blind you. And this is exactly what happened to Saul." [17:05](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

2. "You see, you make a U-turn when you discover that you're heading in the wrong direction. This is what actually happened to him. He had a wake-up call. He had an awareness. He did a 180. He realized, whoa, I'm pushing against the very God that I thought that I was serving. And I'm heading in this direction, but now I see I'm heading in the wrong direction because God is behind me. I'm not sure what's in front of me, but I need to get my life turned around and head and do a U-turn and head in the right direction with God." 3. "Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. At once, he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. All those who heard him were astonished and asked, wait, wait, wait, wait. Isn't he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? These weren't even Christians that were asking the question. They knew who he was. And hasn't he come here? To take them as prisoners to the chief priest? Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the what? The Messiah. He's the king." Who you are becoming changes. Things are going to change. Your life will take on a new direction, a new purpose, a new priority. And if you let him, Jesus will change everything in your life for the good. If you open your heart to him." [27:21](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

5. "And so when Saul is in Damascus and he's blind and he's sitting there just playing everything back, thinking about what he's going to do, then there's another guy by the name of Ananias. And he was a part of the way. And Jesus tapped him on the shoulder. And he said, hey, listen, I've got a plan. There's a guy named Saul. He's waiting for you to restore his sight. He's blind right now. But he's in a house in Damascus. And Ananias with complete and utter respect for his Lord says, Lord? Yeah, Ananias. What is it? Saul? Yeah, Saul. Saul, like the killer? Yeah, Saul. Saul, the guy that actually came here to arrest me and to arrest everybody else? He's like, yeah, that's the guy. And he's like, are you sure? He said, no, that's the guy. Here's the deal. He did a U-turn. And he's on our team now. God is going to use him in incredible ways. So I need you to go and to talk to him."
