John 15 begins with Jesus’ invitation to remain. Jesus does not offer a quick spark for tired people trying to make it through another week. Jesus offers a life that stays connected to its source, like a branch that remains in the vine. The branch cannot bear fruit by itself, cannot live independently, and cannot manufacture what only the vine can give.
The rhythms of ordinary life often train people to look for a spark instead. Coffee, screens, noise, pings, urgent demands, work carried home in the head and bones, and collapse at the end of the day can slowly put a person to sleep spiritually. The question becomes, “What is what you’re doing doing to you?” The deeper question becomes whether those rhythms help a person remain awake to Jesus or narrow life down to personal problems, wants, and exhaustion.
Jesus’ own rhythm in Luke 5 gives a clear picture. Jesus faced crowds, real needs, opportunity, obligation, and people clamoring for his attention, yet Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. Jesus’ withdrawal did not mean the world did not matter. Jesus’ rhythm showed that the matters of the world would not determine the direction of his life. God would determine that direction.
Spiritual practices such as silence, prayer, meditation on Scripture, and worship are not techniques for making God show up. God is already here. Practices interrupt the rhythms that cloud vision so that people can become present to the God who is present, attentive to purpose, and awake to those around them. Prayer does not persuade Jesus to reconnect. Prayer helps a person live awake to the connection already given. Scripture does not force God to speak. Scripture trains ears to recognize God’s voice. Silence does not reach a distant God. Silence quiets the noise that makes God seem distant.
The iPhone battery picture gets spiritual life wrong. Batteries connect, disconnect, run down, and need another charge. The branch picture tells the truth. Jesus is not a charging station. Jesus is the vine. The branch’s responsibility is not to work harder and produce more fruit. The branch stays connected, and fruit grows from the life it receives.
John 15 names goodness as fruit, Jesus as the vine, and practice as a way of learning to remain. Jesus also promises more than fruit: “my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” The invitation is not grim religious obligation. The invitation is to make room for joy. The simple rhythm is this: wake up, make room, and remain.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Wake up to forming rhythms Rhythms are never neutral, even when they feel ordinary. Constant urgency, noise, distraction, and exhaustion can quietly train a heart to live unaware of God’s presence. Honest attention to daily patterns becomes the beginning of a different kind of life. [67:25]
- 2. Jesus withdrew without abandoning people Jesus faced real needs and still made room to pray. Withdrawal was not indifference toward suffering or responsibility; it was resistance to letting demands become his master. Prayer kept Jesus attentive to the Father before returning to the crowd. [72:26]
- 3. Practices reveal God already present Prayer, Scripture, worship, and silence do not make God become available. These practices make distracted people available to God. They refine attention so that God’s nearness becomes more recognizable in ordinary life. [74:38]
- 4. Branches cannot live independently A branch does not produce fruit through strain, image management, or religious effort. Fruit comes because the branch receives life from the vine. Remaining in Christ replaces the exhausting search for occasional spiritual sparks. [80:31]
- 5. Joy grows through staying connected Jesus does not call people into a grim, joyless spirituality. His love and life take root in those who remain, and his joy becomes complete in them. Making room for Christ is therefore not another obligation but an opening into lasting joy.
