#JesusGoesWithYou
“``And you belong to that same Jesus, the one who has all power, all authority. He says that he's going to go with you. And this idea, just as we finish, surely I am with you always. Surely, idol. It means in Greek, that's how we say it in Greek. It means to look and pay attention to. This is true. He's not offering a maybe. It's not a conditional. He's saying to you, I will be there. Not if you perform well enough, if you hit the mark, not if you feel ready, but to the very end of the ages. Take heart. You're not going alone.”

#SentByHisAuthority
“This word therefore at the start of verse 19 is load bearing. The commission, the great commission, the idea that Jesus is sending you and me and he's sending his disciples that it doesn't come before the authority. It's the other way around. Jesus is not saying go because you're capable. Go because you've got it all sorted. He's saying go because I have the authority. That authority is already in me. And you are not being sent on the basis of your skill. You are being sent on the basis of the power that Jesus has, not your power and not your brilliance.”

#WhoseAreYou
“And here's what I want to show you. The thing that made this passage terrifying, I'm sure for the disciples and maybe makes you a little uncomfortable, is the very thing that is going to make it possible and made it possible for those disciples on that hill. Because the question is not about, are you qualified? That question is already answered. Instead the question is, whose are you?”

#PromiseAndCommission
“Jesus has taken that ancient promise and he's giving it to his disciples afresh, to his ordinary disciples who are going to do extraordinary things. It's not just a promise to think of as being reserved for prophets or the patriarchs. It's a promise for you and me this week in those everyday conversations, those everyday relationships, and maybe that conversation that you've been avoiding. The context changes, the location changes, but the promise doesn't. It holds. It holds tight. The commission and the promise go together. They are inseparable for you and I. We go because we have authority and we go knowing that Jesus alongside of us.”

#ShowUpWithJesus
“So when you step out to have that conversation and it might not be the Jesus conversation, it might just simply be living your life faithfully that you are doing so bookended by Jesus' authority and also his promise. So there's none of this, am I good enough? It's more about am I willing to show up in the places and to make the most of the chances that Jesus has entrusted me with today? Where is Jesus already going, and how can I go with him?”

#ImWithYouAlways
“What a joy. Everywhere you go, I am going to be with you. Every conversation, every awkward moment when you're trying to find the words to share with that person, every relationship, every friendship, I'm going there with you and I'm not leaving you. That whole promise has been given throughout scripture. Think about God and his conversation with Moses at the burning bush. I will be with you. Maybe you can think of some other people. Joshua, as he takes over from Moses, imagine how daunting that role was. I will be with you. I will not leave you. And now as we come to the time just before Jesus is going to ascend to heaven, we hear the same words in effect.”

#CommissionAmidDoubt
“And I think that that's worth sitting with for just a moment. That command that Jesus gave them on the hillside, it wasn't given to people who had it all sorted for whom everything was resolved. It was given to a group of followers had doubt but who also worshiped. That's happening side by side in our scripture today. And I love that Jesus knows that and I see how he aims this beautiful message to those disciples he loves. The commission that he's giving them and he knows that he's about to ascend to heaven and that he won't come back again until he comes in judgment for our salvation as it talks about in two Thessalonians. So we have worship and doubt mixed together. So if Jesus commissioned people who were doubting, then I would say whatever qualifies you for this to fulfill the scripture has already happened even if you don't feel ready.”

#BelongNotPerform
“So coming back to that idea, we might not feel ready but we don't step out in faith because we feel ready. We step out because we know that we belong to Jesus and it's in his authority and it is with him that we do so. So what might this look like this week? It might be that you spend some time reflecting on this great commission. It's not a performance review to make you feel guilty. You know, a couple of times a year, this scripture gets brought out so that people remember what we're really about, whether you can judge or write a number of how many people you've had that come to Jesus conversation with. This is a reminder of the beautiful task that Jesus has entrusted you and I with and also to have clarity about whose authority we go and that we belong to Jesus, The same Jesus whose presence goes with us and ahead of us.”
