Maintaining Sexual Integrity in Digital Babylon
Summary
In today's message, we delved into the challenging topic of maintaining sexual integrity in the digital age, a time we refer to as "Digital Babylon." This era presents unique challenges, especially with the pervasive accessibility of pornography and its detrimental effects on individuals and society. We began by acknowledging the alarming reality of how pornography has become a normalized part of many young people's lives, as illustrated by the poignant story of a young girl named Isabel. Her experience highlights the urgent need for a societal shift in how we perceive and address issues of sexual integrity and addiction.
We explored Jesus' teachings from the Sermon on the Mount, specifically focusing on His words regarding lust and adultery. Jesus challenges us to look beyond the surface of the commandments and examine the deeper issues of the heart. He emphasizes that lustful intent is as damaging as the act of adultery itself, urging us to guard our hearts and minds against dehumanizing others through prolonged, lustful gazes. This teaching is not about condemning sexual desire, which is a natural and God-given aspect of humanity, but about channeling it appropriately and valuing the sacredness of sexual relationships.
Jesus uses hyperbolic language to stress the importance of taking drastic measures to protect our purity and the dignity of others. This might mean making significant lifestyle changes, such as removing sources of temptation from our lives, to preserve our integrity. The call to action is clear: we must be willing to sacrifice even the most precious things for the sake of purity and the well-being of our community.
Finally, we discussed the importance of confession as a means of bringing dark things into the light. Confession is a powerful tool for healing and freedom, and within our community, it is met with love, kindness, and forgiveness. We are encouraged to be open and honest with God and each other, trusting that this vulnerability will lead to wholeness and a deeper connection with God.

Day 1: Navigating Digital Babylon
In today's digital age, the pervasive influence of pornography has become a significant challenge, especially for young people. The story of Isabel illustrates how normalized this issue has become, highlighting the urgent need for a societal shift in understanding and addressing sexual integrity. The digital world, often referred to as "Digital Babylon," presents unique challenges that affect individuals' perceptions of intimacy and relationships. It is crucial to recognize the profound impact this has on our youth and communities and to seek ways to counteract these influences. [02:09]
"For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:4-5, ESV)
Reflection: How can you actively guard your heart and mind against the influences of "Digital Babylon" in your daily life?
Day 2: The Heart's Intentions
Jesus' teachings on lust challenge us to look beyond the act of adultery and examine the intentions of our hearts. He emphasizes that lustful intent is as damaging as the act itself, urging us to guard our hearts and minds against dehumanizing others. This teaching is not about condemning sexual desire, which is a natural and God-given aspect of humanity, but about channeling it appropriately and valuing the sacredness of sexual relationships. By understanding Jesus' words, we are called to uphold the dignity of others and ourselves. [14:18]
"Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am being tempted by God,' for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire." (James 1:13-14, ESV)
Reflection: In what ways can you examine and align your heart's intentions with the teachings of Jesus today?
Day 3: Sacrifices for Purity
Jesus uses hyperbolic language to stress the importance of taking drastic measures to protect our purity and the dignity of others. This might mean making significant lifestyle changes, such as removing sources of temptation from our lives, to preserve our integrity. The call to action is clear: we must be willing to sacrifice even the most precious things for the sake of purity and the well-being of our community. This requires courage and commitment to live a life that honors God and respects others. [24:35]
"If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell." (Matthew 5:29, ESV)
Reflection: What is one specific source of temptation in your life that you can remove or distance yourself from today?
Day 4: The Healing Power of Confession
Confession is a powerful tool for healing and freedom. By bringing dark things into the light, we can experience love, kindness, and forgiveness within our community. This vulnerability leads to wholeness and a deeper connection with God. In a supportive community, confession is met with grace, allowing individuals to find healing and restoration. Embracing this practice can transform lives and strengthen our relationship with God and others. [30:28]
"Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." (James 5:16, ESV)

Quotes
Isabel writes, I was 10 years old when I watched porn for the first time. I found myself on Pornhub, which I stumbled across by accident and returned to out of curiosity. The website had no age verification, no ID requirement. Not even an ID. Not even a prompt asking me if I was over 18. [00:03:07] (18 seconds)
A recent Cambridge University study shows that porn's effects on the brain are neurochemically identical to drug addiction. It's as much as a dangerous substance as illicit drugs is. But some, including Nadine Strossen, the former national president of the ACLU, argue that minors' access to porn content is a free speech issue. [00:05:52] (22 seconds)
And although it may seem impossible, the temptation way too great, the invasion of digital Babylon too pervasive, I really do believe that Jesus, Jesus offers hope, a better way made possible through God who is in the business of doing impossible things. [00:11:01] (22 seconds)
Jesus essentially is dismantling the ethical code of a Jewish culture that said it's okay to lust after a woman. It's not that bad. It's not as bad as adultery. And Jesus is saying, in my kingdom, lust is just as bad as adultery. [00:15:50] (18 seconds)
To begin with, the Jewish tradition had a extremely high view of sex and healthy sexual desire. We talked about this quite a bit in our sexual formation series in August, but monogamous marital sex between men and women was exalted in the Jewish culture. [00:16:51] (18 seconds)
And it is with this really high view of sexuality, sex and sexual relationships that Jesus says, guard this precious thing at all costs. Channel your sexual desires appropriately so as not to devalue or cheapen such a precious thing that I created. [00:18:00] (24 seconds)
Sacrifice even the most precious and dear things for the sake of sexual purity and the preservation of the dignity and image-bearing nature of those around you. In other words, delete Tinder and Hinge if they're causing you to intentionally lust after other people. [00:24:42] (21 seconds)
In digital Babylon, where the opportunity to practice the prolonged look, where that has become so accessible, far too prevalent, and even predatory in nature, Jesus is calling all of us to take decisive and drastic action to protect our souls. [00:26:18] (21 seconds)
And I bring that up to say, like, confession is the only way to bring dark things into the light, period. And I think a lot of dark things need to be brought into the light. And here is what I can promise you, both Alex and I, that in your confession, in this community, you will only find love. [00:30:28] (25 seconds)
But instead, you will be praised, honored for your bravery, and celebrated for your confession, and loved as we journey together with one another towards healing and wholeness. And so we're actually going to head into a time of confession today. Alex will be leading us in that. [00:31:07] (24 seconds)
And so if you need to confess, if you need to pray with a prayer partner, if you need to find a microchurch leader, if you need to find one of our pastoral team, if you need to find a friend and confess, we would encourage you to do that. [00:31:53] (14 seconds)
