David’s story in Psalm 34 shows that praise does not have to wait until life is easy. David had been anointed by Samuel, had killed Goliath, and had become a successful military leader, but Saul’s jealousy turned him into a fugitive on the run. David ended up in Goliath’s hometown, carrying Goliath’s sword, and he had to pretend madness just to escape alive. David then found himself hiding in a cave with debtors, fugitives, criminals, and men who probably felt like they did not fit anywhere.

Psalm 34 comes out of that kind of place. David did not write, “I will bless the Lord at all times,” from a palace when everything was going great. David wrote it while trouble was real, fear was close, and his future looked uncertain. David chose to say, “His praise shall continually be in my mouth,” because God was still worthy even when circumstances were not good.

David’s cave became a place where a testimony was shared. David told desperate men, “I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” David called himself “this poor man,” cried out to God, and declared that the Lord saved him out of all his troubles. David invited the misfits around him to magnify the Lord together, because praise turns the eyes away from problems, people, fear, and circumstances, and puts them on God.

David’s invitation, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good,” calls hurting people to find out for themselves what God can do. God’s goodness cannot be reduced to somebody else’s opinion when a person has tasted His grace, seen His faithfulness, and received His peace. David also joined worship with instruction: fear the Lord, keep the tongue from evil, depart from evil, do good, seek peace, and pursue it.

Psalm 34 promises that God sees, hears, draws near, and delivers. The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, His ears are open to their cry, and He is near to the brokenhearted. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers them out of them all. God’s call is not to stay down in defeat, but to get up again, magnify the Lord, and trust Him with every bend in the road.
