Day 1: Hiding in the Wine Press, Seen by God

Fear drives us into hidden places, but God’s presence finds us even there. Gideon threshed wheat in a winepress – a hole meant for crushing grapes, not harvesting grain – because terror of the Midianites paralyzed him. Yet God’s messenger sat under the terebinth tree, refusing to let Gideon’s fear define him. When life forces us into cramped spaces of anxiety, God still names us as His warriors. He sees potential in our trembling hands and speaks courage over our crouching hearts. [49:04]

Then the angel of the Lord appeared and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.” And Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us...” And the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?” (Judges 6:12-14, ESV)

Day 2: The Red Bandana in the Smoke

Courage isn’t the absence of fear, but the choice to walk toward need. Wells Crowther carried a red bandana – a simple tool that became a lifeline for dozens in the 9/11 towers. Like Gideon, he faced choking smoke and impossible odds. True valor emerges when we fix our eyes not on the chaos around us, but on the people God calls us to serve. Our ordinary tools – a bandana, a prayer, a willing heart – become holy in His hands. [35:35]

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. (Deuteronomy 31:6, ESV)

Day 3: When the Fire Springs Upward

Gideon’s sacrifice erupted with unexpected fire – not from heaven, but upward from the rock. God’s answers often defy our formulas. The terrified farmer became a general not through self-improvement, but through surrender. Our weakness becomes the kindling for divine fire when we stop calculating outcomes and simply offer what we have. True peace comes not when battles cease, but when we trust the One who fights with us. [42:05]

And the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes. And fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. (Judges 6:21, ESV)

Day 4: Paul’s Hand in the Rubble

Janelle survived 9/11’s collapse because a stranger named Paul held her hand for 27 hours. God’s presence often comes through ordinary saints – the friend who texts truth, the neighbor who listens without fixing. Like Gideon’s terebinth tree, these “Paul moments” remind us we’re not abandoned. Our calling isn’t to escape the rubble, but to become someone’s tangible reminder of God’s grip in the dark. Day 5: Altars Named Mid-Battle

Gideon built his “Lord Is Peace” altar before fighting Midian. True peace isn’t the absence of conflict, but the presence of God in the conflict. Like Janelle praying beneath concrete or Wells climbing smoky stairs, we worship while still in the winepress. Our altars aren’t victory monuments, but battle markers declaring “God was here.” Name yours today. [01:05:17]

Sermon Summary

God made people for more than barely getting through the week, more than yesterday’s regrets, today’s fears, and tomorrow’s worries. God sees the overlooked, restores the broken, and calls ordinary people to do extraordinary things for His glory. The story of the man in the red bandana pictures what courage can look like when life becomes a mess in a moment and someone chooses not to run from the need right in front of him.

Judges 6 opens in a dark season for Israel. Israel had slowly drifted from God, tolerated idols, adapted to the culture around them, and neglected God’s Word. The Midianites then came like locusts at harvest time, taking crops, livestock, and everything Israel needed to survive. The book of Judges becomes a mirror, warning every life, community, and nation that compromise does not stay small for long.

Gideon appears in a winepress, hiding while threshing wheat because fear had pushed him into a hole in the ground. Fear still drives people into their own winepresses, behind busy schedules, humor, isolation, and false fronts. Yet Gideon may have been hiding from the enemy, but he was never hidden from God. The angel of the Lord comes near, sits under the terebinth tree, and speaks the foundation Gideon needs: “The Lord is with you.”

God then calls Gideon “mighty man of valor” before Gideon looks anything like a warrior. God sees beyond fear, failure, and frailty to what a person can become through faith and obedience. God’s calling never rests on the greatness of human strength, but on the power and presence of God Himself.

Gideon’s honest questions reveal a wounded and discouraged heart: If God is with Israel, why has all this happened? God does not shame Gideon for asking. God also does not let Gideon stay in self-pity, excuses, or despair. God redirects Gideon from rehearsing the pain of the past toward becoming part of God’s answer for the future: “I will be with you.”

Gideon’s offering becomes a costly act of worship in a time when food is scarce. God consumes the sacrifice with fire from the rock, and Gideon realizes he has stood before the holiness of God. God meets Gideon’s terror with peace before giving him a battle plan. The Lord is peace, not because the Midianites disappear, but because Gideon no longer faces the battle alone. Christ gives that same peace through His death, resurrection, and victory over death.
