Day 1: When Light Exposes the Cockroach Brooch

The new birth transforms our perception like sudden light revealing a cherished necklace as a filthy pest. What we once clung to with affection becomes repulsive when God’s truth illuminates reality. This radical shift in desires—hating what we loved, loving what we scorned—is no mere self-improvement. It’s the Spirit rewriting our affections, making obedience from the heart possible. Freedom comes not through willpower but through seeing sin’s true nature in Christ’s light. [09:21]

Day 2: Dead Men Walking in Devil’s Rhythm

Spiritual death doesn’t mean inactivity but harmony with Satan’s cadence. Unregenerate lives march to the devil’s drumbeat—even when denying his existence—through rebellion masked as autonomy. The prince of lies thrives when people dismiss him as myth while dancing to his tune. True liberation begins when God breaks this syncopation, making Christ’s melody drown out the enemy’s rhythm. Day 3: Gentle Warfare Against Bondage

Liberation from darkness requires surprising weapons: kindness, patience, and truth spoken without quarrel. Like a surgeon removing tumors with precision, God uses humble servants to dismantle strongholds through gentle correction. Victory comes not through shouting matches but through steadfast love that makes the devil’s lies implausible. Every gracious word chips at sin’s prison walls. [06:26]

“The Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness.”

Day 4: Prostituted Hands Made Sacred

Apart from the new birth, every human faculty—mind, hands, relationships—becomes a brothel trafficking God’s gifts for lesser loves. Regeneration turns prostituted potential into temples where work, creativity, and love glorify their Maker. What was ruined by self-interest is being restored through the Spirit’s surgical redemption of our very desires. [12:15]

Day 5: Birth Pangs for Eternal Joy

The new birth isn’t heaven’s entrance exam but the first contraction in God’s labor to deliver everlasting delight. Justification, adoption, sanctification, and glorification flow from this divine delivery. What begins as spiritual sight (seeing the Kingdom) culminates in face-to-face communion—where every Christ-awakened longing finds its eternal yes. [23:35]

Sermon Summary

Romans 6:17 celebrates a liberation that cannot be chalked up to human resolve. “Thanks be to God” is the cry because the slave of sin has become obedient from the heart. The new birth gives a new heart, writes the law there, takes out old hatreds and old loves, and puts in new ones. Sin had been the master, but God makes the heart hate sin, love righteousness, and move toward holiness.

Ephesians 2 names another terrible bondage. Spiritual deadness is not neutral toward the devil. Deadness is “in perfect sync with the devil,” walking according to the prince of the power of the air. The denial of the devil fits the prince of lies just fine, because “what would one expect from the prince of lies?” Satan’s snare works through deception, and the unregenerate mind is in lockstep with him.

Second Timothy 2 gives the strange shape of liberation. The Lord’s servant is not quarrelsome, but kind, able to teach, patient, and gentle with opponents. God may grant repentance, and that repentance leads to a knowledge of the truth. Suddenly what was boring or hated becomes interesting and necessary and beautiful and crucial. Truth comes, and the truth makes the captive free.

The new birth is like light shining on a treasured brooch. In the dark, the sinner fondles it as precious. When light is given, the brooch is seen to be a cockroach, ripped off, and thrown away. Freedom is not bare self-rule. Freedom is wanting holiness, hating the devil, and fleeing from him.

Romans 7:18 says that apart from the new birth, “nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh.” The flesh can still have hands, brains, marriage, family, government, and business, all made and sustained by God. Yet every good created thing is ruined when it is not used in reliance on grace and in pursuit of glory. A good thing sold away from God becomes prostituted.

John 3:3 gives the future-facing reason for the new birth. Unless one is born again, that person cannot see the kingdom of God. Without the new birth there is unbelief, condemnation, devilish sonship, fruit for death, and eternal misery. With the new birth, faith awakens, union with Christ happens, justification comes in an instant, adoption makes a holy family, the Spirit bears love, and eternal life becomes knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom he has sent.

This is one of the terrible things about our spiritual deadness. Our deadness is not unresponsive to the devil. Our deadness is in perfect sync with the devil. Listen to Ephesians 2 1 and 2. You were dead in your trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience. God through faith counts us as righteous because we're in Christ. What he is counts for us. And he was perfect. We're not. His perfection counts for us because we've in we've been united to him. Romans 5:1. Therefore, since we have been justified by faith which was awakened by the new birth, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. New birth awakens faith. Faith looks to Christ for righteousness. In that moment, we are counted righteous forever. [00:20:22]

Number one, when God causes us to be born again, saving faith is awakened and we are united to Christ. 1 John 5:1, "Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God." Not will be born of God. Say it again. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God. The first flicker of life in the newborn soul is faith. They are inseparable. They happen simultaneously. [00:18:59]

And the implication is when you are born again, a new heart is given you. The law is written on your heart. The old disincclinations and hatreds and loves are taken out. New hatreds and new loves are put in. You hate sin and you love righteousness and your heart goes out towards holiness. And now obedience marks your life. [00:02:21]

And then the gift of light is given and we look down. It's a cockroach. It's a cockroach hanging on this string around my neck. We rip it off and we throw it away. That's what happens when you're born again. Freedom is to do what you want to do. And the new birth is designed to make you want holiness and hate the devil and flee from him. [00:09:21]

Jesus said, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind and all your strength." Meaning all that stuff you do with your hands and all that stuff you do with your brain and all that stuff you do with your heart, let it be reliance on his grace and a display of his glory. And if you don't, it is ruined. [00:11:53]

Everything good that God has made, everything good that God sustains is ruined when it does not get used in reliance upon his grace and in the pursuit of his glory. [00:10:45]

The Lord's servant must not be quarrelome, but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them to repent, leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil after being captured by him to do his will. Finally, number five, when the new birth awakens, faith unites us to Christ. Christ becomes our righteousness. Sanctifying power of the spirit is unleashed in our lives. We're on the narrow way that leads to life. And the pinnacle of that new life is knowing God and enjoying him forever. [00:23:06]

So yes, the human being, the human person, soul, mind, heart, brain, eye, hand, social, human structures, marriage, family, government, business, they're all good. That is, God made them. God holds them in being. God wants that they be. It's good that they be, but they all exist for the glory of God. [00:11:07]

That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the spirit is spirit and spirit is good. Everything God doing in your life is beautiful. It may be contaminated by some leftover you. But he's doing a good work in your life. Don't belittle it. [00:13:38]

When the new birth wakens faith and we're united to Christ and condemnation is replaced with justification and the spirit of adoption comes in, he now begins to work his nature. Remember this. He now begins to work his nature. They're called the fruit of the Holy Spirit. [00:22:06]

We are apt to teach, correcting, gently loving, displaying, hopefully some of the glories of Christ in our way of loving our enemies, demon oppressed and controlled enemies, even if they like us. And God may and this is the new birth happening here grant them repentance. [00:07:23]

So the sequence seems to be we do teaching. I'm going to get to this in a couple of weeks about how the new birth is brought about. Here we're we're talking. We're talking. We're loving and God may open, regenerate, change, heart transplant, give faith, give repentance, knowledge happens. [00:08:39]
