Luke 9:28-36

Luke 9 puts the disciples on a real mountain after Peter has named Jesus as the Christ but still does not understand what kind of Christ he is. The mountain carries all that biblical weight: Sinai, Moriah, Horeb, the places where God shows up and reveals himself in surprising ways. Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up high enough that the climb itself costs something, and then Jesus is transfigured before their tired eyes. Jesus does not become somebody else; his glory becomes visible through what had been veiled.

Moses and Elijah appear in glory and speak with Jesus about his “departure,” his exodus that he will accomplish in Jerusalem. Luke uses Exodus language to show that Jesus will lead a deeper deliverance than Israel’s escape from Pharaoh. Moses and Elijah also signal that something is afoot: the archetypal prophet and the promised returning prophet stand with the Son. Peter responds like an external processor caught in a moment too big for him, offering to build three tents. Peter’s instinct makes sense because Tabernacles remembered God dwelling with Israel in the wilderness and anticipated God tabernacling with his people again.

Jesus himself is already the true tabernacle. John later says that the Word became flesh and tabernacled among humanity, so Peter is trying to build what God has already provided in Christ. The cloud then overshadows the disciples, carrying the same glory-language of Sinai, the tabernacle, and the Spirit overshadowing Mary. The Father speaks from that cloud: “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.”

The Father’s words reveal both Jesus’ identity and the shape of discipleship. The Father does not hand the disciples a maxed-out spiritual plan or a list of fifteen things to do. The Father invites them into a conversational relationship where listening comes before action. Discipleship begins with being welcomed as beloved, then attuning to the voice of Jesus through the Holy Spirit, and then responding to his particular invitation.

The five-lane highway of old habits makes that response hard. The Spirit often hands people a machete and leads them into a little trail through the jungle, where new faithfulness feels slow, awkward, and resistant. The Spirit does not meet that resistance with shame. The Spirit gently opens up the deeper undercurrents beneath it when people bring their reluctance into conversation with God.

Jesus does not leave the disciples on the mountain with a faded spiritual high. Jesus walks down the mountain with them into ordinary life, and the risen Christ later gives the Spirit to remain with his people there. The Father’s delight, the Son’s presence, the Spirit’s voice, and the body’s companionship meet believers not only in mountaintop moments but also in the messy contours of everyday life.
