Luke 8:40-56 // Faith that Amazes // Part 7

Luke 8 brings Jesus back across the Sea of Galilee into a crowd that is eager for him, and the text places two desperate people at his feet. Jairus comes as a respected synagogue ruler, a man with position, reputation, and something to lose, but his only daughter is dying. Desperate faith comes because Jairus has run out of options, and only Jesus has the power to save, heal, restore, and guide.

The woman with the chronic bleeding condition comes from the other side of life. Her suffering has lasted twelve years, the whole lifetime of Jairus’ daughter. Her money is gone, her health is gone, and her place in the synagogue is gone because her condition makes her ceremonially unclean. Desperate faith acknowledges the end of self, because sometimes a person has to bottom out before the illusion of control finally breaks.

The fringe of Jesus’ garment carries deep meaning in the scene. The tassels reminded Israel of God’s law, covenant, holiness, and promises, and many believed the Messiah would have healing in his fringe. The woman believes that if she can just touch that tassel, she will be made whole. Jesus knows the difference between a crowd brushing against him and one deliberate touch of faith reaching for him.

Jesus stops and asks, “Who touched me?” not because he needs information, but because he wants the miracle brought into the light. The woman cannot stay hidden, and Jesus does not shame her. Jesus calls her “daughter,” restoring not only her body, but her identity, her place, and her belonging after twelve long years of isolation.

Jairus has to stand there while Jesus heals somebody else. His daughter is dying, and then the word comes that she is dead. Desperate faith waits, because with God a delay is only a pause, not denial. Jesus says, “Do not fear. Only believe,” and the interruption becomes preparation for a greater miracle.

Jesus enters the house where mourners are already wailing, and the mourners laugh when he says the girl is only sleeping. Jesus takes the child by the hand and says, “Child, arise,” and death itself has to let go. The delay was not a mistake. The delay was a revelation. Desperate faith is rewarded, not because desperation has power, but because desperate faith brings a person to Jesus, and closeness with him is the greatest reward.
