50s
“``Disciples don't carry a cross because suffering is meaningful. Disciples carry a cross because love is meaningful. You want me to say that one again? Disciples don't carry a cross because we love sacrifice and pain. You read the da Vinci code and you have this person whipping themselves because they think it makes them more holy. That's not the thing. Suffering isn't meaningful. is meaningful and when love calls us beyond comfort, beyond safety, beyond self preservation, we often discover that what looked like losing our life is the beginning of finding it.”

“He doesn't say there's nothing to fear. You hear the difference? He says do not be afraid. There are some real fears here. Don't let fear make your decisions. is fantastic actually. Fear is a great advisor. Fear keeps you from doing a lot of stupid things, right? And a lot of dangerous things and a lot of risky things. Fear is a great advisor and a terrible boss. We don't want fear making decisions for us or we will never see the light of day again. So when it comes time to follow Jesus, fear doesn't get to drive. We take the keys and give them to someone who is a more trustworthy guide which is love.”

“And it's not far from the question that Jesus is asking. Not whether following him will be difficult, it will. who will we will become when fear and rejection and sacrifice inevitably arrive. John says perfect love casts out fear. Perfect doesn't mean flawless, it means complete. Loving helps us become resilient, more complete, more whole in the face of failure and fear and sacrifice so that we can become not more right but more loving.
