The fruit of the Spirit grows low and slow, not by human effort but by the Holy Spirit’s power. The Spirit stays with God’s people, shapes them into who God wants them to be, and makes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control possible. The fruit does not exist for private consumption. The image of a tree makes the point plain: a tree does not eat its own fruit. Love and joy are meant to be given away.
Love stands first on the ingredient list because it is the biggest part of the fruit. The barbecue rub picture makes love practical: salt and brown sugar form the base, while the other ingredients build the flavor. First Corinthians 13 makes love more than a warm feeling or a romantic idea. Love is patience, kindness, humility, truthfulness, protection, hope, perseverance, and the refusal to keep score. Love does not say, “I will do something for you if you do something for me.” That kind of transaction is coercion, not love.
Love also refuses to serve the self. The shopping-list image exposes the things easily forgotten, especially “not self seeking” and “not boasting.” Love does not take out the trash, help a neighbor, or serve a spouse just to hear, “Thanks for noticing.” Jesus must be noticed through the act, not the person doing it. God’s love pours itself out before receiving anything back, and love answers that grace by pouring into others.
Jesus joins love and joy in John 15. Jesus calls his people to remain in his love, obey his commands, and receive his joy until their joy is complete. Joy does not mean chasing whatever feels good in the moment. Happiness depends on hot wings, coffee, chili, easy days, and favorable circumstances. Joy is deeper: a settled condition that comes from God and defines circumstances instead of being ruled by them.
The joy of the Lord gives strength in grief, cancer, funerals, sleepless nights, and disappointment with God. Joy does not celebrate pain itself. Joy holds on through pain because God remains present and his ways are better than human expectations. Nehemiah’s call to enjoy choice foods and sweet drinks also gives permission to enjoy God’s good gifts, share with those who have little, and find simple joy in popcorn, tacos, brownies, and generosity.
Jesus remains the source of every bit of good fruit. Love and joy turn rotten when they become detached from him. Jesus calls his people to abide through Scripture, prayer, church, and service, so that love and joy become the foundation instead of sand.

Key Takeaways
- 1. shaped love can give freely even when the response is disappointing. [43:32]
• Joy outlasts changing circumstances
Happiness rises and falls with food, comfort, health, and good news. Joy remains available in loss because it rests in the presence and promises of Jesus rather than in the moment’s outcome. Christ does not ask anyone to celebrate suffering, but he does sustain joy in the middle of it.
• Conflict can serve genuine love
Love does not always look quiet or easy. Iron sharpening iron creates sparks, noise, and pressure, yet its purpose is to make both pieces stronger. Christ-shaped conflict seeks another person’s good rather than trying to win, control, or treat a spouse as an enemy.
• Jesus keeps the fruit alive
Love and joy cannot be maintained through personality, effort, or religious busyness. Jesus supplies the life that keeps spiritual fruit from becoming rotten. Scripture, prayer, gathered worship, and serving others keep the heart attached to the true source.
