A church that pleases God is a church that loves like God. Love cannot be left to whatever people happen to mean by it, because the definition of love believed will determine how God and others are loved. God defines love in 1 John 4:8: God is love. God does not merely have a supply of love that can run out. God is love, and His love does not depend on performance, because Christ’s performance on the cross settled the matter before anybody was born, sinned, failed, or came back home.
First Corinthians 13 gives love some skin on it. Love is patient, kind, not envious, not boastful, not proud, not self-seeking, and not easily angered. Love protects, trusts, hopes, perseveres, and never fails. Love does something before it feels something. Love acts before it feels. Like is the emotion, but love is the action. God never commands a feeling. God commands obedience. Biblical love chooses to serve, forgive, wait, and show up before the warm and fuzzy feeling ever arrives.
John 3:16 shows God’s love coming down through Christ, while 1 John 3:16 shows that same love moving through believers toward brothers and sisters. God’s love cannot come to a person and then stop there. The greatest commandment joins loving God with loving people, because love for God and hatred for people cannot live together. Religion can believe in God, follow rules, and check the church box, yet still miss intimacy with the One who died. Love for God grows out of gratitude, not just expectation. God deserves praise not only for what He gives, but for who He is.
First Corinthians 13 becomes humbling when God’s name replaces the word love. God is patient. God is kind. God keeps no record of wrongs. God never fails. First Corinthians 13 becomes even more humbling when a personal name gets put into those verses. Human strength cannot love like that on its own. The Holy Spirit inside believers must be allowed to respond before the flesh responds.
Patience waits without trying to force everybody onto a personal schedule. God gives space and time for repentance, spiritual growth, and change. Kindness becomes love’s response to another person’s weakness. God’s people can be kind to the rude waiter, the difficult spouse, the slow driver, and the hurting coworker because God has been kind when kindness was not deserved. Envy, boasting, and pride struggle to rejoice when somebody else receives the very blessing that has been long awaited. Identity in Christ frees a person from needing to boast.
God stands ready with all wisdom and power, like the former major leaguer standing by the fence while somebody with high school experience tries to run the team alone. Surrender finally says, “Coach, come and take over.” God’s love does not need merely more opportunities. God needs willing vessels through whom His patience, kindness, and love can flow.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Love acts before feelings arrive Love is not proven by waiting until affection feels easy. Love chooses obedience when serving, forgiving, and staying faithful feel costly or inconvenient. God’s commands call for action because mature love is more than an emotional reaction. [11:31]
- 2. God’s love must flow through people Christ laid down His life not only to reveal love, but to create a people who lay down their lives for one another. Love for God cannot be separated from love for difficult people. A person cannot claim deep devotion to God while refusing the neighbor in front of them. [15:24]
- 3. Religion cannot replace intimacy with God Believing facts about God is not the same thing as loving God Himself. Rule-following without affection becomes dry, distant, and transactional. Gratitude restores the heart to worship God for who He is, not merely for what He provides. [17:58]
- 4. Kindness answers weakness with strength Kindness does not pretend that rude or cruel behavior is acceptable. Kindness refuses to let another person’s weakness dictate a fleshly response. God’s kindness toward undeserving people becomes the pattern and power for responding differently. [36:54]
- 5. Surrender lets God love through believers Self-reliance keeps trying to fix marriages, families, finances, and circumstances without God’s direction. God patiently waits, fully able to take over what human wisdom cannot manage. Love becomes possible when the Holy Spirit is allowed to respond first.
