Luke 22 brings the church into that holy upper-room moment when Jesus takes the bread and the cup before His suffering. Jesus calls the cup “the new testament in my blood,” blood shed, poured out, spilled out for His people. John the Baptist points straight to the heart of it when he says, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” The Lamb of God is spotless, stainless, sacrificial, and altogether sufficient.
The Passover lamb in Exodus had to be without blemish, and every household needed the blood for protection. Jesus Christ fulfills that picture completely. His blood is not the blood of goats and calves. His own blood obtains eternal redemption. Grace does not leave a lost soul dressed in filthy rags. Grace washes, covers, cleanses, and makes the sinner white as snow through the precious blood of Jesus.
The blood of Jesus first condemns Satan. Satan loses his control, power, and authority over the blood-bought, heaven-bound child of God. First John declares that the blood of Jesus cleanses from all sin, and Hebrews declares that Christ entered once into the holy place with His own blood. The redeemed name is written in the Lamb’s book, and the soul covered by Christ is eternally forgiven.
The blood also covers sin. Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission. Works cannot cover sin. Being good cannot cover sin. Being nice cannot cover sin. A holy, infinite, sovereign God requires more than human effort, and Calvary supplies what no sinner could ever supply. Christ covers disbelief, guilt, and the unsaved soul when that soul calls upon His name.
The blood further comforts the spirit with heaven-bound assurance. The child of God can look beyond the last earthly breath and know that the next breath will be in the New Jerusalem. The streets of gold, walls of jasper, and pearly gates are not earned by human merit. They belong to those made clean by the Lamb of God. That day will be a coronation day because Christ has carried His people from filthy rags to white as snow.
The Lord’s Table calls for reverence, repentance, and remembrance. The broken bread declares Christ’s body broken at Calvary, and the cup declares His blood shed for sinners. The cup should not become a throwaway reminder. The blood of Jesus remains the answer when the devil comes knocking: “Look at that cup. I’m a child of the King.”

Key Takeaways
- 1. The blood condemns Satan completely. Christ’s blood breaks Satan’s claim over the sinner who has been washed and redeemed. The enemy may accuse, tempt, and knock at the door, but he cannot reclaim a soul purchased by Calvary. A blood-covered child of God stands heaven-bound because Christ’s authority is greater than every power of hell. [38:30]
- 2. No blood, no remission of sin. Human goodness cannot stand in the place of Christ’s sacrifice. Works, kindness, and religious effort cannot cover exposed sin before a holy God. The cross is not an added help for self-made righteousness; it is the only cleansing for a soul that cannot cleanse itself. [40:47]
- 3. The Lamb makes filthy rags white. The Lamb of God does not merely improve the sinner’s condition. Christ brings a soul from guilt and ruin into forgiveness, cleansing, and a new standing before God. The white-as-snow promise rests not in changed appearances, but in the spotless Lamb’s blood. [41:31]
- 4. Heaven-bound assurance comforts the spirit. The blood of Jesus gives more than relief for the present moment. Christ gives settled hope for the final breath, the New Jerusalem, and the day His redeemed people see Him face to face. The believer’s confidence is not in avoiding death, but in knowing death opens into glory. [42:23]
- 5. The Lord’s Table demands holy remembrance. The broken bread and the cup call the church to remember the price paid at Calvary. Unconfessed sin, broken fellowship, and careless hearts belong before the Lord in repentance. Christ’s table is a place of gratitude, reverence, and fresh remembrance that believers are children of the King.
