Remembering the Lord's Supper: Sacrifice, Proclamation, and Call

Luke 22 places Jesus in Jerusalem during the final week, where his open opposition to the Jewish leaders has pushed them into a frenzy. The chief priests and scribes want him dead because their authority is slipping through their fingers like sand, but they fear the people. The feast of unleavened bread and Passover form the setting, and that setting matters because Passover is the capital-T story of Israel.

Israel had lived four hundred years as slaves, sixteen generations with no normal future outside bondage. God raised up Moses, struck Egypt with plague after plague, and then announced the death of every firstborn. The lamb became the way of escape, not because Israel deserved it, but because God provided a substitute. The blood on the doorposts meant death would pass over that house.

The Passover meal carried all that history in its symbols. The roasted lamb remembered sacrifice, the bitter herbs remembered the bitterness of slavery, and the unleavened bread remembered the hasty departure from Egypt. The four cups remembered God’s promises: sanctification, deliverance, redemption, and praise. The fourth cup especially carried longing, because in exile Israel left it full as a sign of waiting to be home with God.

Jesus takes that deeply loaded meal and gives it new kingdom meaning. He earnestly desires to eat this Passover before he suffers, but he also says he will not eat or drink again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. The cup of praise becomes a promise held out before the disciples: the kingdom is coming, but first comes the cross.

Luke’s narrative places Judas at the table, and the text says Satan entered him. Judas is not presented like some obvious villain in the corner. Judas is trusted, close, and ordinary enough that the others do not immediately know who could betray Jesus. The word “betray” means to hand over or sell, and Jesus’ statement forces the heart to ask what price would be enough to sell him out.

Judas sold Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Peter would deny Jesus for personal safety. The same spirit can show up in convenience, reputation, entertainment, relationships, or whatever becomes worth more than obedience. The antidote to that Judas spirit is found at the table where Jesus gives bread and cup.

Jesus says the bread is his body, given and broken. Jesus says the cup is the new covenant in his blood, poured out. Paul says that eating the bread and drinking the cup proclaims the Lord’s death until he comes. The Lord’s Supper looks back to the cross, up to the risen Christ, forward to his return, outward to fellow believers and unbelievers, and inward to the personal sin that made his blood necessary.
