Matthew 6:7-8 keeps setting the doorway into the Lord’s Prayer by going after the heart beneath the words. Jesus warns his disciples not to “babble on and on” like the Gentiles, not to heap up empty words as if prayer works because of how much talking happens. The word “Gentiles” matters here, because Jesus is not talking about covenant children simply praying too long. First Kings 18 gives the picture behind that kind of prayer. The prophets of Baal cry out all day and all night, repeating words to a false god who cannot answer. Disciples pray to “your Father,” the one true God who already knows exactly what is needed.

Matthew 7 does not contradict Matthew 6. Jesus says not to babble, and then says to keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking. The difference is not short prayer versus long prayer. The difference is vain repetition versus persistent trust. Persistence is not a lack of faith when it is relational. Jesus in Gethsemane prayed the same burden three times, not because the Father was uninformed, but because the Son poured out his heart in surrender.

Prayer, then, is not informing God of anything. The Father already knows the need, the worry, the trouble, the future, and the heart. Prayer is communication that becomes communion, a spiritual union and intimate connection with the Father. The Lord’s Prayer is not a lifeless formula to recite on autopilot. Jesus gives a model, a way to pray, so the words can come alive with understanding instead of becoming monotone in the spirit.

The heart and the tongue are spiritually connected. Jesus says that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, and James 3 shows that the tongue directs, destroys, and discloses. The tongue is like a bit in a horse’s mouth, a rudder on a ship, and a tiny spark that can set a whole forest on fire. True change does not begin by merely trying to tame the tongue. God changes the heart, and the tongue follows.
