Sermon Summary

God is so good, and God is the one who never changes but changes everything. The Lord’s Prayer opens as something fresh, not just familiar words that have been memorized and repeated over and over. Jesus gives his followers more than a formula. Jesus says, “pray like this,” and the words leading up to “Our Father” matter because they set the heart right before the mouth starts moving.

Matthew 6 places this instruction right in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus sees the crowds, goes up the mountain, sits down, and his disciples gather around him. So when Jesus says, “when you pray,” he is talking to his followers. Jesus does not say “if you pray.” Jesus says “when,” because prayer is not optional for a follower of Christ. Prayer is supposed to be a given thing, an essential part of life with him.

Jesus first shows what not to do. The text says not to pray like the hypocrites, and that word points to an actor, someone wearing a mask. The hypocrite wants to look spiritual on the outside while the heart is somewhere else. The hypocrite loves the platform, loves to be seen, loves to be heard, and loves the approval of man. But God does not look at the things people look at. God looks at the heart.

The platform exposes the heart. More money only makes a person more of what already is there, and the same is true with visibility, influence, and gifting. A gift can get someone platformed by man, but a gift by itself is not oily. The oil, the anointing, is produced in the presence of God. The platform can make someone seen, but it cannot manufacture oil.

Jesus calls his followers away from the platform and into the secret place. Jesus says to go into the room, close the door, and pray to the Father in private. That “room” is the inner chamber, the hidden place, the treasure room. The secret place holds treasure because the Father is there. The hypocrite gets the praise of man, and that is all the reward there is. But the humble heart gets the presence of God.

The Father’s call is not condemnation. The Father is wooing, reminding, and saying, “I’m waiting for you.” Yesterday’s bread will not sustain today. No one can borrow intimacy from another person’s prayer life. The private prayer life must stay first, because life is sustained and shaped in that place with the Father.
