The name of the Lord isn’t a slogan but a fortress. Like watchtowers guarding vineyards from foxes, God’s character stands unshaken amid life’s chaos. To “run” into His name means more than hurried prayer—it’s collapsing into His proven faithfulness. Just as towers offered physical safety in ancient battles, His names—Jehovah Jireh, Rapha, Shalom—hold power to shelter weary hearts. Safety isn’t found in circumstances but in who He is. [22:37]

Day 2: The Ram in the Thicket and the Lamb on the Cross

Abraham’s knife hovered over Isaac, but God’s eye was already on the ram. Every twist in the story of Genesis 22 whispers Calvary: a Father sacrificing His Son, wood laid on shoulders, a substitute’s blood. Jehovah Jireh didn’t just provide a ram—He pointed to the Lamb who’d say, “It is finished.” Provision isn’t convenience; it’s God rewriting despair into deliverance. [49:01]

Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide.” (Genesis 22:13–14, ESV)

Like the woman crushing Abimelech’s skull with a millstone, God uses unlikely means to save. The cross is both rescue and reckoning: safety for the repentant, ruin for the proud. Proverbs 18:10 declares that “the name of the LORD is a strong tower,” and that name is Yahweh, the covenant name of God. The image of the tower carries the weight of safety, watchfulness, refuge, and warning. Towers stood in Israel’s walls, fields, and cities so that danger could be seen coming and so that frightened people could run in and be safe. The righteous do not stroll into that tower. The righteous run, because danger is real and safety is found only in the LORD.

Solomon gives that word as a man who knew the God of Israel, even though Solomon did not end well. The text reaches beyond Solomon to “a greater than Solomon,” Jesus Christ, the wisdom of God and the final resting place of every name of Jehovah. The whole Bible gathers around Him. God’s saving purpose was not drawn up after man fell. God determined before the world began that His Son would take a body, walk up Calvary’s hill, die in the sinner’s place, rise again, and bring life and immortality to light through the gospel.

Genesis 3:15 gives the first gospel picture, where the seed of the woman bruises the serpent’s head while His heel is bruised. Abraham receives the promise that in his seed all nations will be blessed, and Galatians shows that seed is Christ. The tabernacle, the temple, the sacrifices, the pictures, types, shadows, and promises all point to the Lamb God would provide. The Bible’s heart, soul, and life is Jesus going to the cross.

The ten compound names of Jehovah give refuge to God’s people, and each finds full and final fulfillment in Jesus. Jehovah Rapha heals, Jehovah Shalom gives peace, Jehovah Raah shepherds, Jehovah Tsidkenu is righteousness, Jehovah Shammah is there, Jehovah Sabaoth is the LORD of hosts, and Jehovah Elyon is the Most High. Yet Jehovah Jireh stands first in the argument, because “the LORD will provide.” If God had not provided Himself a Lamb, every other attribute would remain terrible to the sinner instead of gracious toward the sinner.

Genesis 22 opens the meaning of Jehovah Jireh. Abraham takes Isaac, the beloved son, lays the wood on his back, and goes to the mount God showed him. Isaac asks, “Where is the lamb?” Abraham answers, “God will provide himself a lamb.” The ram caught there becomes the substitute, but Calvary becomes the fulfillment. In the mount of the LORD it was seen, and the Lamb of God died outside the gate.

The name of Jesus is therefore the strong tower. Salvation is in none other name. The sinner in danger must run to Christ, call upon the name of the LORD, and be saved. The saved soul then learns to live with that name in view, because God still provides, still orders paths, still rules circumstances, and still does all His pleasure.
