The call of Jesus is not an invitation to consider but a command to follow. It demands a response that is both immediate and complete, leaving behind the old life to embrace the new. This kind of obedience is not born of obligation but of a recognition of His supreme authority. It is the starting point of a life lived under one Lord. [01:53]
And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
Matthew 4:19-20 (ESV)
Reflection: What is one thing in your life that you have been hesitant to leave behind in order to follow Jesus more completely? What would it look like to release that to Him today?
Jesus Christ is the supreme, sovereign ruler, the master of all. His lordship is not one option among many but the exclusive claim upon every believer's life. This truth is unchanging, the same yesterday, today, and forever. Our allegiance is to be undivided, with no rival claims to our ultimate loyalty and devotion. [49:57]
...one Lord, one faith, one baptism...
Ephesians 4:5 (ESV)
Reflection: Where do you see the greatest competition for your ultimate allegiance—is it your schedule, your finances, or the approval of others? How can you practically reaffirm Christ's lordship in that area this week?
The Christian faith is built upon a shared, unchanging body of truth delivered once for all. This is not a personal interpretation but the apostolic witness to Christ. We are called to guard this truth, to contend for it energetically, and to align our lives to its unchanging standard, resisting any teaching that would distort its core. [01:12:46]
Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you appealing that you contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.
Jude 1:3 (ESV)
Reflection: In a culture that often presents truth as relative, which core doctrine of the faith do you feel the need to understand more deeply to stand firm?
A life of true discipleship is characterized by a non-negotiable obedience that often comes at a cost. History is filled with witnesses who valued Christ above safety, reputation, and even life itself. This is not mere admiration of Jesus but a willingness to surrender everything for the sake of knowing Him and making Him known. [01:04:39]
Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
Luke 6:46 (ESV)
Reflection: Is your relationship with Jesus based more on admiration or on obedience? What is one step of obedience He is asking of you that would require a deeper level of trust?
The world offers a frantic pace and countless voices vying for our attention, leading to bondage. True freedom and rest are found in stepping off that merry-go-round and into a life of surrendered intimacy with Christ. He alone is our treasure, our rest, and our source of joy, far surpassing any earthly pleasure or temporary comfort. [59:57]
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:28-29 (ESV)
Reflection: What does the "merry-go-round" of a busy life look like for you, and what would it practically mean to get off of it in order to create more space for Christ?
Paul’s letter in Ephesians four anchors a compact, urgent summons to spiritual unity: one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, and one faith. The first three oneness realities receive a concise review—believers enter one body by the Holy Spirit, receive a shared hope rooted in the cross and the Spirit’s indwelling, and are called out of spiritual infancy toward maturity. The oneness theme then shifts to two crucial pillars: one Lord and one faith. One Lord demands a single, public allegiance to Christ as sovereign Master; any rival loyalties—time, ideology, or the hunger for approval—fracture that allegiance and hollow out obedience. True lordship issues in nonnegotiable obedience, daily dependence on the Spirit, and a life that gets off the cultural merry-go-round to breathe and pursue intimacy with Christ.
One faith requires a common content: apostolic witness, historic confession, and guarded doctrine. The apostolic testimony carries authority because eyewitness testimony anchors what Christians confess about Christ, the cross, and salvation. Weakening core doctrines—Trinity, incarnation, substitutionary atonement—softens Christ’s lordship, turns the cross into mere inspiration, substitutes strategy for Spirit, and leaves the church vulnerable to every passing ideology. Contending for the faith involves intentional struggle: test every thought, take it captive to Scripture, and prioritize doctrinal clarity over cultural approval.
Historical witnesses underline the cost and clarity of this oneness. William Tyndale’s translation work and martyrdom, and Lady Jane Grey’s youthful refusal to recant, illustrate that one Lord and one faith demand courageous fidelity and a willingness to suffer rather than dilute the gospel. The letter closes with a pastoral challenge to reorder schedules, finances, and affections so that allegiance to Christ becomes visible and contagious. The exhortation remains practical: cultivate doctrinal conviction, resist cultural relativism, and let the Spirit shape a church marked by shared confession and obedient unity.
Can you imagine what our lives would be like if we held the Bible like we hold our phone? And that the word of God would be before us more than our phone. But we have so many rival allegiances today that we give our time under those things. As Christians and as Christian families, before anything else, are we orienting our lives? Are we making sure that our kids' lives are immersed in God's ways and connected to his bride? These are critical things.

So all of us have this reality. Politics is not our Lord. Music's not our Lord. Economic stability is not our lord. Equality on people is not our lord. We have one lord, and it's Jesus. And he makes some pretty exclusive claims about being one lord. So we, therefore, are to be united in every kind of way under the lordship of Jesus.

We have no other lord, in case you haven't got the point yet, but Jesus. And we are not listen to this. We are not to allow ourselves to have any other kind of allegiance. And that rang the bell to make my point. We are to have none. No other allegiance. So let me ask a question I've been asking myself. Does our schedule, our schedule, your schedule, does our schedule with our kids' activities, Does our schedule with our church attendance priorities? Does our bank account? Does our time? Do our hobbies give evidence that Jesus Christ is our lord and we serve him only? We are to have no rival allegiances in our lives.

This has been our prayer, and we talk about this all the time at the church. The adjustment of our faith always is in not we humans who know we have issues. We all know that we have struggles. We all know that we wrestle things. So how crazy is it that at times, whether we admit it or not, we have attitudes of the heart that says, well, God, I want you to adjust to me. Instead of us coming and saying, I am so desperate for the truth of God that I'm willing at whatever cost to adjust my life to the truth of God and to walk in the reality of what he has set forth for me because in the truth, I find life.

the line about morality and the line about truth has been moved multiple times. And I used to teach this all the time as I was a youth minister that there was a line and students would always come to me and say, hey, Doak. How close to the line can I get without going over it? And I would always say to them, that's the wrong question. The question is how far from the line can I get? Because back here, there is security and safety by walking in the truth.

Here's the problem with ideologies, and our country is just littered with them. You need to just hear them all the time. Just turn on turn on the news. Well, just just as an experiment. Just that the news is just craziness today. But just listen and you'll hear ideology after ideology. Here's the problem with ideologies for the believer. Ideologies are attempts to explain meaning in life without keeping in mind the cross in Jesus. And there's no solution to an ideology. That's why Christianity is absolutely critical that we are living in such a way that we explain the meaning of the world in light of the cross. That's critical.
