The psalmist expresses a deep longing and yearning to be in the house of the Lord, not out of obligation or routine, but out of a genuine relationship with God. This desire is so strong that being away from worship leaves one feeling unfulfilled and incomplete, highlighting the unique joy and satisfaction found only in God’s presence. In a world where church attendance is often seen as optional or unnecessary, we are reminded that gathering together in worship is a source of spiritual strength, encouragement, and delight. Let your heart be stirred to seek God’s presence with the same passion, knowing that time spent in His house is never wasted. [45:03]
Psalm 84:1-2, 10 (KJV)
How amiable are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts!
My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord:
my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.
…
For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand.
I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God,
than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
Reflection: When was the last time you truly longed to be in God’s presence with His people? What is one step you can take this week to rekindle or deepen your desire to gather in worship?
Scripture calls us not to neglect meeting together, but to encourage one another as the day of Christ’s return draws near. In a culture that often minimizes the value of church community, we are reminded that assembling with fellow believers is essential for spiritual growth, mutual support, and exhortation. The act of gathering is not just a tradition, but a vital practice that strengthens our faith and keeps us connected to the body of Christ. Don’t let distractions or discouragement keep you from the blessing of Christian fellowship—make it a priority to be present and engaged in the life of the church. [49:36]
Hebrews 10:25 (KJV)
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Reflection: What is one practical way you can encourage someone else in your church family this week, either by reaching out, praying for them, or inviting them to join you in worship?
Just as the sparrow and swallow find a home and safety near God’s altar, so too do we find provision, protection, and a place to praise when we dwell in God’s house. No matter how insignificant or restless we may feel, God welcomes us to find rest, nurture, and belonging in His presence. In the house of the Lord, we are reminded that God cares for our needs, shields us from harm, and invites us to lift our voices in worship. Let your heart be encouraged that you are valued and safe in God’s house, and that your praise is precious to Him. [58:51]
Matthew 6:26 (KJV)
Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Reflection: In what area of your life do you need to trust God’s provision or protection more fully? How can you express your gratitude and praise to Him today, knowing He cares for you?
The psalmist declares that even the lowest position in God’s house is better than the highest luxury outside of it, emphasizing the surpassing value of being with God over any worldly gain. True fulfillment is not found in titles, wealth, or comfort, but in serving and dwelling with the Lord. This calls us to examine our priorities and to make a conscious decision to choose God’s presence, even if it means humility or sacrifice. Remember, a moment with God is worth more than a lifetime of worldly pleasures—choose to stay in the house, no matter the cost. [01:10:45]
Psalm 84:10 (KJV)
For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand.
I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God,
than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
Reflection: Is there an area where you are tempted to seek comfort or recognition outside of God’s will? What would it look like for you to choose humble service in God’s house instead?
There is joy, deliverance, and fellowship in the house of the Lord, and God is preparing His church for an eternal home with Him. Being part of God’s family means being covered by His love, surrounded by support, and assured of a future hope. No matter what storms or challenges come, you are safe and secure in Christ, and you have a place where you belong. Let this truth fill you with gratitude and anticipation, knowing that God is coming back for His church and that you are invited to be part of His eternal house. [01:18:46]
John 14:2-3 (KJV)
In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
Reflection: How does knowing you have a secure place in God’s family and future home affect the way you face today’s challenges? Who can you invite or welcome into God’s house this week?
Psalm 84 reminds us of the deep longing and joy that comes from being in the presence of God, especially within the gathered community of believers. In a world that increasingly treats Sunday as just another day and church as optional, it’s easy to lose sight of the blessing and necessity of coming together in God’s house. The psalmist’s words express a yearning not just for a building, but for the unique experience of God’s presence, protection, and provision that is found when we gather as His people. This is not about obligation or routine, but about relationship—a desire to be where God is, to worship Him, and to be strengthened for the week ahead.
The imagery of the sparrow and the swallow nesting near the altar is a powerful reminder that even those considered insignificant or restless can find a home, safety, and belonging in God’s house. If God provides for the birds, how much more will He care for us when we draw near to Him? The church is meant to be a place where we are nurtured, protected, and encouraged, no matter our background or status. It is a place where praise is not optional, but a natural response to God’s goodness and faithfulness.
The psalmist declares that even a single day in God’s courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. This challenges us to value our time in God’s presence above all else, even if it means serving in the most humble of roles. True fulfillment is not found in titles, positions, or worldly success, but in simply being in the house—serving, worshiping, and living in relationship with God and His people. The decision to be in the house is a declaration that we would rather have God’s presence than anything the world can offer.
Ultimately, God’s house is not perfect because of the people in it, but it is the right place because of the perfect God who meets us there. He invites us into fellowship, covers us with His protection, and fills us with His Spirit. When life’s storms rage, when the enemy attacks, or when the road gets tough, there is no better place to be than in the house of the Lord. And one day, when this life is over, those who have chosen to dwell in His house will be welcomed into His eternal presence.
Psalm 84:1-4, 10 (ESV) — > 1 How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts!
> 2 My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.
> 3 Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God.
> 4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise!
> ...
> 10 For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
There is a misconception in this generation. Some feel like we don't need church. COVID got us conditioned that we don't have to come to the house. Some believe that church is not essential or relevant, and that they can have a relationship without being in the house. I'm old enough, and we're living in a new day, I'm old enough to remember where nothing went on Sunday morning. Some of y'all remember when the stores used to be closed all day Sunday. Then they started moving where they wouldn't open up until 12 or 1 o'clock. And now they just treat Sunday like any other day. [00:46:00]
There's a decline in the actual attending of church and worship, and now church has become optional. We've lost the desire to come together in the name of the Lord, to offer sacrifices, to worship together, and to sing praises to His name. [00:47:19]
I come to church because I want to feel His presence. I come to church because I need some strength to handle what's about to happen on this week. I come to church to fellowship with other like-minded believers because there is a blessing being in the house. [00:49:04]
As contemporary Christians, we ought to have the same desire and dedication to making our way to the house of God as much as we can. God wants us to dwell in his house. He wants us to worship together in his house. [00:49:36]
Can I encourage somebody, we ought not allow anything or anyone to hinder our desire and determination to get to the house of the Lord. Watch this, not only the physical house, but the spiritual dwelling of our relationship with God. [00:50:11]
A genuine worshiper has a strong, determined desire to be in the house of the Lord. Desire, determination to be in the house of the Lord. He says, I have a soul that longs to be in the house. I'll tell you, I've been going to church all my life, and when I miss worship, something just don't feel right. When I miss worship, something, I'm not as fulfilled as I want to be. [00:50:48]
We've got to have a deep-down internal feeling or desire. And can I tell you, in this contemporary culture, we've lost the desire to be in the house. [00:51:31]
The psalmist is stating that to be in the house is all that he needs. He doesn't need or have room for anything else. So he said, a heart cries out to be in the presence of the Lord. [00:52:00]
The psalmist then views the temple site through spiritual eyes as the Lord's dwelling place and the place where his people can meet him in worship. Realizing that worship in such a context is not merely the fulfillment of an obligation, but a transforming experience of joy and delight found only in the beauty of God's presence. [00:52:40]
The psalmist says, I didn't come out of obligation. He said, but I came to worship out of relationship. And some folk want to feel holy just because you text, you was at the house of the Lord on social media. But somebody in here said, that I come because I need a touch from the Lord. I come because I'm not coming out of obligation. I'm not coming out of routine. But I'm coming because I have a relationship with God. [00:53:11]
While we are in church, we must realize that there are benefits to dwelling in the house of the Lord. There's benefits of coming to the house. [00:54:09]
Worship in church ought to be the place that when we come we feel protected we feel loved we feel the presence of God in this place. If the insignificant birds could nest in the presence of the king then should not his people who know him as my king and my God sit at home and come to worship. [00:57:18]
Sparrows are some of the most worthless birds but they said if I build my nest in the temple even though others may think I'm worthless God thinks in life you're not the best that you can be but when you come into the house of the Lord there's no big eyes or little youth that God loves us. [00:58:12]
The psalmist says, not only do I see worthless birds in the temple, but I see some birds that normally don't hang around too long. And now they are here resting and nesting in the place of God. Come here, somebody in here. You ought to testify that when you get into worship, sometimes you're used to fleeing things. You're used to running from things. But when we come to the house, we want to reside in the house. [00:59:17]
If God will feed his birds in the house. Surely he'll provide for his children in the house. Not only is there provision, but watch as there's protection in the house. If the birds are protected near the altar, then we too are safe near the altar. When all the world is falling apart, when we're surrounded by death, destruction, violence, sickness, famine, plague, and war, we are safe in the arms of Jesus. [01:00:11]
Worship is the intimate and emotional time when we are in communion with the living God who loves us and wants what's best for us. And the psalmist is thinking of the fact that if the birds can dwell in the house, then sure, the servant of God ought to be able to dwell in the house forever. [01:01:23]
When you think about dwelling in the house, there should be some prayers that go hand in hand. Watch this, praise is not option. When Jesus was on his way into Jerusalem, they keep them quiet for me. We're trying for them to hinder their praise. And Jesus said, watch this, if they don't cry out, he said, I got some rocks that'll cry out in my place. Don't have a few folk in here saying, I'm more blessed than a rock. I'm better than a rock. God has done more for me than a rock. And if God has done all of that for me here, then surely, I'm not going to let no rock cry out in my place. [01:01:51]
Even a moment in the presence of God is far greater than a lifetime apart from Him. Y'all, I got a favorite vacation spot. And a favorite vacation spot is any place that I ain't been yet. I'm trying to get my wife to take me to Hawaii. We ain't been there yet, amen. But what's this? If the situation was optimal, you would spend the rest of your life at your favorite vacation spot. But if you can't stay there the rest of your life, at least a little while, But be enough. Ah, you understand. And so, a little time. When church is how God wants it to be, there's no better place than to be in the house. [01:05:19]
If I could spend four and a half hours on the golf course. Women, if you could sit for eight to nine hours, give your head a break, you know? And you could go to the barbershop and spend about three to four hours. And you could go at a happy hour. And you're not there for two hours. You're not there for the rest of the night. And you could go through all of this. And why is it? And the rest of the place where deliverance is, sorry is, loving it. You're ready to go home. He said a little time. [01:08:23]
The psalm says, if I've got to be the lowest one, that's all right. Can I help somebody? Too often, we want to tie what we do for God to titles and money. I'm not trying to say no about it, but watch this, he says, if the only time you move for God is if somebody gives you a title or somebody are just thankful? How many of us are just thankful that God has given us a gift? [01:09:59]
The psalmist said, I'd rather be broke and low in the house than to be rich in the world. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You get some money. Yeah, you understand. The psalmist said, he said, I'd rather be in relationship with God. So I'm going to hesitate to make a decision to stay with the Lord in the house than to operate without the Lord in the world. [01:11:20]
The church will not be perfect, but God is perfect. And when we stay under his protection and provision, we'll be in the right place for a long time. [01:13:17]
So not only does God love us enough to send his son to die on our behalf to pay the penalty for our sin, but this God loves us enough to give us his Holy Spirit to live within us. So we might have fellowship and an intimate relationship with God, with the creator of the universe. [01:13:32]
When the storms of life are raising, I want to be in the house. When a demon. Are on the attack I want to be in the hot When the road gets tough When the road gets tough I want to be in the hot Is there anybody That don't mind Just having church with me I'd rather be Where I can praise God And worship Him Is there anybody This is all of you You will be in the house And in that house There's joy in the house There's deliverance in that in the house. There's joy in the house. God has done so much for us. But I'd rather be in the house than to be in the world. [01:14:22]
Because one day when this life is over, when this life is over, I can't take my money with me. I can't take my furniture with me. I can't take my family with me. But one day's coming when we're going to meet Jesus in the middle of the air. And watch this. I don't want to be out of practice. I want to get it right here. So that when that time comes, I can fall in line and testify of His goodness. [01:18:03]
