Longing for Eternal Life: A Personal Journey with Jesus

Summary

In today's gathering, we explored the profound longing within every human heart for eternal life, a yearning that transcends our earthly existence. This desire is deeply embedded in us, as King Solomon noted in Ecclesiastes, where he speaks of God placing eternity in our hearts. Despite our culture's obsession with extending life through technology and ideologies like transhumanism, we recognize that true eternal life is found only in Jesus Christ. In John 11, Jesus declares, "I am the resurrection and the life," offering us the promise of life beyond death.

We delved into the story of Mary Magdalene and the empty tomb, highlighting the importance of evidence for our minds, answers for our hearts, and personal encounters for our souls. Mary, a devoted follower of Jesus, was the first to witness the empty tomb, a significant detail given the cultural context of her time. Her encounter with the risen Christ underscores the need for personal revelation and relationship with Jesus. When Jesus called her by name, she recognized Him, illustrating the intimate and personal nature of our relationship with God.

We also discussed the necessity of evidence for our faith, emphasizing that our belief in Jesus is not blind but grounded in historical events and eyewitness accounts. The resurrection of Jesus is a well-documented event, supported by numerous witnesses, including over 500 people who saw the risen Christ. This evidence strengthens our faith and provides a solid foundation for our belief in Jesus as the source of eternal life.

Furthermore, we acknowledged the challenges and pain life brings, which often blur our vision of Jesus. In these moments, we need answers for our hearts, trusting that God is with us and that His promises are true. Jesus' question to Mary, "Whom are you seeking?" invites us to focus on Him, even amidst our struggles, and to trust in His love and guidance.

Ultimately, our journey with Jesus is deeply personal. We are invited to move from a general understanding of God's love for everyone to a personal realization that God loves each of us individually. This personal relationship with Jesus transforms our lives, giving us hope, purpose, and the assurance of eternal life.

The human heart is imbued with a profound longing for eternity, a desire that transcends our earthly existence. This yearning is not a mere cultural construct but a divine imprint, as noted by King Solomon in Ecclesiastes, where he speaks of God placing eternity in our hearts. Despite society's attempts to extend life through technology and ideologies like transhumanism, true eternal life is found only in Jesus Christ. In John 11, Jesus declares, "I am the resurrection and the life," offering us the promise of life beyond death. This promise fulfills the deep-seated desire for eternity that resides within each of us. [03:54]

Ecclesiastes 3:11 (ESV): "He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end."

Reflection: How does the awareness of eternity in your heart influence your daily decisions and priorities? What steps can you take today to align your life more closely with the promise of eternal life in Jesus?

Day 2: Faith Grounded in Evidence
Our faith in Jesus is not a blind leap but is supported by historical evidence and eyewitness accounts. The resurrection of Jesus is a well-documented event, with over 500 witnesses who saw the risen Christ. This evidence provides a solid foundation for our belief in Jesus as the source of eternal life. The story of Mary Magdalene and the empty tomb highlights the importance of evidence for our minds, answers for our hearts, and personal encounters for our souls. Mary's encounter with the risen Christ underscores the need for personal revelation and relationship with Jesus. [13:46]

1 Corinthians 15:3-6 (ESV): "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep."

Reflection: What historical evidence of Jesus' resurrection strengthens your faith the most? How can you share this evidence with someone who is seeking truth today?

Day 3: Clarity Amidst Life's Challenges
Life's challenges and pain can often blur our vision of Jesus, making it difficult to see His presence and promises. In these moments, we need answers for our hearts, trusting that God is with us and that His promises are true. Jesus' question to Mary, "Whom are you seeking?" invites us to focus on Him, even amidst our struggles, and to trust in His love and guidance. By focusing on Jesus, we find clarity and hope, even in the midst of life's trials. [22:06]

Psalm 34:17-18 (ESV): "When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

This event strengthens our faith and provides a solid foundation for our belief in Jesus as the source of eternal life. The story of the empty tomb and the eyewitnesses to Jesus' resurrection remind us that our faith is not based on myth or legend but on a historical reality that has transformed lives for centuries. [30:21]

Acts 2:32-33 (ESV): "This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing."

Quotes

Today we are celebrating the one who truly gives eternal life. The only one that can give eternal life. In John chapter 11, Jesus is at a funeral of his friend Lazarus. And he says, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though they die, they will live. Though they die, they will live. I'm banking on that. I'm all in. Chips are all in on that reality of who Jesus is. [00:05:04] (31 seconds) Edit Clip

There's a story in the gospels where Jesus heals a man who had been blind from birth. And he did it on the Sabbath. And the religious leaders were all ticked off about it. And they bring that man before them. And they were asking questions about, well, what happened? Who did this, et cetera? And he said, all I know is I was blind and now I see. He kept it real simple. And I think that's the truth for us as well. [00:09:49] (28 seconds) Edit Clip

Mary Magdalene saw the tomb. Then John sees the tomb. Then Peter saw the tomb. And then John saw again, very important there. There is nothing wrong with needing evidence for your mind. There's nothing wrong for needing some empirical evidence about your faith. We are not following blindly or just jumping off a cliff following some sort of mythology or fairy tale. No, there's history to what it is we're reading. There's eyewitnesses. [00:13:10] (33 seconds) Edit Clip

I think, let me give you a couple things that would be evidence for your mind if you struggle believing whether Jesus really rose from the grave and what we have written down for us. The first thing is Mary Magdalene and women were the first to see the empty tomb. In those days, women were not allowed to testify in courts of law, so their opinion wouldn't have mattered. If the Bible was trying to be deceptive, they wouldn't write that Mary was the first to see. [00:13:46] (31 seconds) Edit Clip

The apostle Paul wrote 1 Corinthians about 20 years after the resurrection of Jesus. 20 years is not a long time for something to become a myth or a legend or anything like that. He was giving eyewitness account. Like I wasn't in World War I or even World War II, but I know it happened. I know it happened because of the witnesses and the historical things that we have to understand these two huge wars. The same with the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. [00:15:58] (32 seconds) Edit Clip

So by Jesus folding up that napkin, he's telling you and I, he's never going to the grave again. He has overcome death, and he did that for you and I. That you and I who believe that he's the resurrection and the life, though we die, we will live, and we will never go back to the grave. Jesus rose in a body that cannot die. And then John, in verse 8, he also saw. He saw twice. [00:20:29] (31 seconds) Edit Clip

I need answers for my heart. Life brings pain. Life brings trials. Life brings difficulties. We make mistakes. And sometimes we just ask God, like, why? Maybe in here we believe. We believe the facts. I believe. But man, when life hits you with pain, it's your heart that needs answers. And the facts don't always make us feel better. Let's keep reading. Verse 1 again. Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb while it was still dark. [00:21:22] (40 seconds) Edit Clip

Where have you taken him? I need his body back. Where have you taken him? She was so focused on her pain. For us, when we go through painful things, that can cause us to not see Jesus. And what we need is something, answers for our heart. Jesus said, whom are you seeking? God often asks rhetorical questions to people when he already knows the answer. He asks questions to us so that by answering, it touches our heart. [00:24:40] (31 seconds) Edit Clip

Maybe today, for some of us in here, the question, the rhetorical question that God is asking you is, will you trust me? Will you trust me? And he wants us to answer wholeheartedly, yes, I will trust you. Yes, I will trust you. It's the whole theme of scripture. Will we trust God? Will we trust his promises? So I need evidence for my mind. I need answers for my heart. And then thirdly, I need something personal for my soul. [00:25:17] (34 seconds) Edit Clip
