“So over and over and over again, we're reminded of the importance of scripture, keeping scripture at the forefront of our lives and our faith because it's what God called us to do and because it all is from God in one way or another.”
“But bottom line, have coats, bring them in. And boots, boots, coats, anything. Hats, gloves, anything like that. We're gonna stock up so we can help people with that. Uh there's a few notes in the bulletin about food pantry needs, Acme receipts, and then on Sunday, November 23, that will be the fourth Sunday of November. So that means our lunch bunch will meet after worship for lunch, and we're going to just do a potluck.”
“Because the Bible did not just fall from the sky as is written exactly this way in this shape and form. It had a beginning. So what we want to look at is how did it get from where it first began to where we are now.”
“God does not just stand above us and wave a wand and make people do everything God wants. God doesn't make people do everything the way God wants in the way in the time that God wants from the very beginning or what we know of who God is and was.”
“The most significant and constant thing about God is that God is about being in relationship. Just look at Godself. It's not just God. It's God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. So right from the get-go, it is not just God, but it is God in one with relationship and relationship with others.”
“And it's true even with our sacred text that from the very beginning, God was present while people did the best that they could with what they knew to connect to God in the ways that they could. So here we have the beginning of the Hebrew Bible which later grew into what we refer to as the Old Testament which all of these sacred texts uh built the foundation for our lives of faith that we have today.”
“And what I like to think when I look at this is it's not about who's wrong or right? Because I mean, let's be honest, who are we to say anybody really is wrong or right about God, right? We are not experts. How can we deny someone holding a story of God and God's importance to them and telling them it's wrong or it's right? Especially especially if it is steeped and rooted in love.”
“So if whatever that person believes helps them know God better, helps them know that love of God better, whatever a community of people know or believe that helps them build that relationship with God, as long as it is rooted in love, then it is good. It is not about wrong or right. It is good.”
“There's a completely different way I talk to my daughter about a serious issue than I talk to my oldest son. There's different ways we build our relationships. And that is so true with God, too. So, it's not for us to say that one is right and one is wrong. It's about what is good.”
“All of this knowing that it came from this beginning that was first started just by telling stories. Telling stories from generation to generation. How those stories kept God alive until then it could be written down. And then how all those written words were then told again to continue to keep God alive and moving and living and breathing within people for generations.”
“But because all those stories were told, were written down, were shared from generation to generation, people were able to continue to know God, they were able to continue to hold on to the promises of God. And people were able to continue to wait expectantly for this God to keep showing up and deliver God's people from the way of the world.”
“So over and over again, yes, we are reminded of the importance of keeping scripture at the forefront of our lives and our faith as it is what God calls us to do and it is what helps us build relationship with God. But today also needs to remind us that God's story is also a very human touched story because what people did, who they were, where they came from, and how they experienced God has all been a part of God's story being told over and over and over again, breathing new life into people over and over and over again.”
“And as it said in Hebrews, I love that faith that is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see, which is exactly what the ancients were commended for. So hearing the story, hearing how we came from knowing God just through talking to one another and sharing it with each other to then writing it down and then understanding it deeper and rewriting it down so that more people could know and more people could learn.”
“Let us carry that with us in all the ways that we live out our faith so that we too can be the people that will someday be commended for that too. And now I ask us as people of faith as we prepare to take all of this that have we experienced as last Sunday was All Saints Day and we got to share in memory and honor of this great cloud of witnesses who have gone on before us.”
“So, as we prepare to sing our hymn of invitation and connect with God, however we need to do that today through this time of music, may it be a time that you hold close this love of God that was so strong that it was passed on through stories for years and years. and the story of God that was then written down that continues to be written down and invites us all in to continue to know this living God living and moving and breathing in our lives today.”
“So at this time as we stand and sing our hymn of invitation, I invite your heart and spirit to connect with this God that we know and love living and moving and being in us in whatever way your heart and spirit needs to do that today. Let us stand and sing.”
