The shepherds heard a heavenly announcement of great joy meant for everyone; they got up, went with haste, saw the baby in the manger, treasured what they saw, and then told others so that the blessing would spread — this is an invitation to choose joy and to move toward the people and places where God is at work, not to wait for perfect circumstances but to show up and share the good news. [36:59]
Luke 2:10-20 (ESV)
10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” 15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
Reflection: Who is one person in your everyday life (coworker, neighbor, friend) you can intentionally tell about the joy you’ve found in Christ this week, and what specific, simple words will you use to invite them to hear more tonight or tomorrow?
God honors those who move toward what He calls them to do; the sluggard’s appetite goes wanting, but those who are diligent press in, get fulfilled, and are able to be used to bring blessing and joy to others — choosing to act in obedience opens the door for God’s satisfaction in life and ministry. [40:35]
Proverbs 13:4 (ESV)
The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.
Reflection: Identify one person or one small task you have been avoiding that would move God’s work forward (invite someone to an event, make a phone call, volunteer); what is one concrete step you will take today to begin being diligent about it?
When a plan is prayed over and committed to the Lord, He will go before that plan and establish it; start with prayer, entrust practical plans to God, then move in faith — God helps shape the way as people take steps of obedience rather than waiting for perfect certainty. [41:10]
Proverbs 16:3 (ESV)
Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established.
Reflection: What is one modest goal you can commit to the Lord right now (an invitation, a visit, a teaching moment), and what specific time this week will you act on it after praying and asking God to establish the plan?
Whatever is done for others should be done with whole-hearted devotion as if serving Christ himself; when service is offered “as for the Lord,” it carries eternal significance, removes half-heartedness, and becomes a way to give joy and witness in ordinary moments. [50:48]
Colossians 3:23-24 (ESV)
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Reflection: In one everyday responsibility this week (work, home, volunteer), how can you change your mindset to serve “as for the Lord” and what specific action will demonstrate that change today?
God calls His people to prepare — to study, to present themselves approved, to handle Scripture carefully — so that when opportunities to share arise, words are trustworthy and hearts are pointed to Christ; preparation honors God and equips believers to give joy to others without shame. [52:01]
2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV)
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
Reflection: What single Scripture passage will you read and meditate on today to better prepare you to share the gospel this week, and when will you read it so the truth is fresh when an opportunity to speak arises?
Joy isn’t the sparkle on a card; it’s the deep peace and steady hope that come because Jesus stepped into our world. The holidays can pull impatience and weariness to the surface—lines that don’t move, travel that breaks down, gatherings that don’t go to plan. Yet joy is possible as we embrace the fullness Christ brings. The angels announced “good news of great joy for all people,” and the shepherds show us a pattern: they heard, they went, they saw, and then they shared. They didn’t let excuses, timing, or self-consciousness stop them. They moved, and joy moved through them.
We wrestled with how joy lives inside grief through the story of little Leroy, whose parents trusted God’s answer even when it wasn’t the one they longed for. That family found a strange but real joy in knowing their son is with Jesus. Joy like that grows where we choose to see what God is doing, even when tears are real. Proverbs tells us diligence leads to a filled life; so we commit our steps to the Lord and actually take them. Joy grows when obedience moves from ideas to action.
I confessed how often we overthink what people might think—about our clothes, our age at the gym, our words about Jesus. If we can be bold about our styles and opinions, we can be bold about love that saves. Mary pondered, but she didn’t hide; she treasured and later told. We serve the Lord Christ, not the court of public opinion, so we do our work with a clean heart and a ready word.
Then God met me on the side of Highway 77. My car died, strangers pushed me to safety, and a simple Burger King conversation reminded me I could either stew or choose joy. I realized even partial help was a real blessing, and my assumptions needed to be surrendered. That interruption became an invitation—to thank people, to witness with a smile, and to remember that joy is meant to be given away. So let’s not settle for passive invitations. Let’s personally bring people close, tell our stories, and be glad when they find friends in God’s family. This week, don’t just find joy—give it.
But you've got to choose to find joy. And after you choose to find it, you may still try to pick it apart. And the Lord will say to you, hey, guess what? Let me show you how you were blessed. Let me show you. The song that we sing every Christmas season, joy to the world, the Lord has come. And without him, there would be no joy because he came to bring the fullness of joy. [00:35:42] (33 seconds) #ChooseJoyInChrist
See, we can come up with reasons as to why we can't find joy or why we can't share joy with other people. We are concerned about how other people are going to feel or what they're going to think or if we might say the wrong thing, or what if we give somebody money on the side of the road and they use it for something other than what they say they're going to do? That's not us. How somebody receives the message is not on us. We have been told to go and share the message to all people so that all people can have joy. [00:38:44] (37 seconds) #ShareJoyWithoutFear
``But if we don't share it, nobody's going to hear it. And we can't worry about what somebody's going to think about it. We just have to do it. I don't know if you all saw the news, but Nigeria has had a rash of attacks on Christians, children, adults, a school, people beheaded in the name of Jesus because they stood firm on what they believed. And I'm afraid to share it with the person in the cubicle next to me. Oh, my friends, we have got to share Jesus while we have the opportunity. [00:39:21] (38 seconds) #BoldlyShareFaith
If you decide to do it, commit it to the Lord and he will help you with your plans. We always wonder, how are we going to do that? Well, you start with prayer and you tell the Lord the desires of your heart and how you want to do it and you commit to the plan, he will come alongside and show you. He will go in front and you will come alongside and he will show you how to do what it is that he has called you to do. But we got to do it. See, that's the first thing. We have to actually move. [00:40:43] (30 seconds) #PrayThenAct
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the baby who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what they had been told about this child. And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds had said to them. See, they went. And they didn't just go and look and go back home, but they were so excited. They were so fulfilled because they were diligent in getting there. And when they saw what they saw and it matched what they had been told, they began to tell everybody who would listen and maybe some who didn't. [00:42:04] (42 seconds) #GoAndTell
And I told them, you blessed me so much. And so I went from there while waiting on Kirsten. You can see my little car just sitting there back there. So I go on up to the, I walk up to the Burger King, and I said to Kirsten, when you get here, just let me know. I'm at the Burger King. No big deal. Just show up. So I'm sitting there, and I'm eating my little cheeseburger, and I'm just waiting. And I was chatting with somebody on the thing, and I said, I choose to choose joy today. [00:55:56] (33 seconds) #ChooseJoyToday
I can be upset that I'm not going to make it to Houston, and obviously not going to make it to Corpus for a while. But I choose joy. I choose to feel blessed. Now, I was a little agitated at the first two guys who only got me out of traffic. But you know what? Sometimes we say, that person needs more help than I can give, so why do anything at all? God doesn't ask us to give beyond what we can. If we can't do it, but doing something is better than nothing. [00:56:29] (38 seconds) #DoWhatYouCan
And it does not matter if we feel like sharing or not. When God asks us to do something, we do it to the fullest of our capability because nobody likes a half-done job. Don't just invite somebody to church. Hey, come to church. That's passive. You say, hey, you know what? On this date, we are doing something really cool at church. I would love to have you come out. Get them in the door at something that isn't scary like family feast or hanging of the greens in a time that you can get them in just to have fun. [00:59:39] (41 seconds) #InviteWithPurpose

And then you hook them with the story of Jesus, and then they don't just see you. And if they're not resonating with you, there is somebody in this congregation that will go, ooh, yeah, I got it. That's me. That's where I can connect. And then don't get upset when your friend finds another friend in church. You just say, yes, they have a friend. Thank you, Jesus, that they now know the gospel. See, we can get caught up in all sorts of things. But what we got to get caught up in is sharing joy. [01:00:21] (31 seconds) #ShareJoyNotCredit
But we've got to share God's word, because we are living in a world that has no joy and is looking everywhere to find it. And we have the answer to the fullness of joy. This week, maybe I'll do a test next week. Maybe I'll make everybody turn in a paper with how you found joy. But what I want you to do this week isn't necessarily where you found joy, but where you gave joy. Where did you deliberately give joy to someone else? [01:03:15] (38 seconds) #GiveJoyDeliberately
